Semifinal Performances: Blake and Sanjaya

I'm going to recap the boys performances, giving each of them a letter grade. Here goes...

BLAKE LEWIS
If Blake is going to thrive in this competition, like I think he can, he's got to become something more than just the "beat box kid." Its promising that he showed some signs of personality in his interview clip...perhaps Chris Sligh will have some competition for this season's comedian. He sounds great singing 311's "Trust Your Instincts" (I have no idea if that is the actual title of the song), but despite the vocal complexities of the song, its not quite a wow performance. I like it, don't get me wrong, I'm just not wowed. I'm also getting a little nervous that the beatboxing is going to get old sooner than later, but I'm encouraged by his first performance of Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know," where he showed he's got the goods to hang with the best of them. Randy echoed what I said in an earlier post--its good to have some current male singers, relevant in today's musical landscape, in the competition. And on a side note...does Blake not look like a cross between Dominic Monaghan (Charlie from Lost) and Travis from So You Think You Can Dance? I mean, come on!
Grade: B+

SANJAYA MALAKAR
Oh, good lord. I mean, from the hula-ing in the intro (he made AJ Tabaldo look positively butch) to the oh-so fabulous haircut to the practically whispered take on John Mayer's "Waiting on the World To Change," the best word to describe this performance (and the judges' comments) is embarrassing. I just want this poor kid to be put out of his misery. And to be honest, I would like to be put out of my own misery. Here's what I don't understand...if the judges think he's terrible, and me and everyone I know thinks he's terrible, who is sitting at home voting for this kid? I mean, seriously? If you voted for Sanjaya, please, I beg you, leave a comment and tell me what about him appeals to you. I thinkPaula Abdul said it best... "I really don't know what else to say."
GRADE: D

VFTW (VoteForTheWorst.com) combined with the teeny bopper vote, and possibly the South Asian voters is what I think is keeping Sanjaya around. I do not think VFTW has really had much impact on the show (although they would like everyone to consider their late season support of Taylor Hicks as success) in the past. But I wonder with everyone so blah about this year's contestants if they aren't actually having some success, especially with Sanjaya. They say they have chosen Antonella & Sundance as their choices, but if you look around on their message board (and no one sane could for very long), many truly support Sanjaya feeling the early choice of Sundance was an error as the worst male contestant. I just cannot imagine Sanjaya is getting that many votes from real supporters. Oh well, my 2 cents. Cool blog you have. I really miss Taylor, Elliott, Chris, Paris, and even old Pickler. Sorry, I just do not miss Kat.

Yes it is miserable how every year someone who absolutely has no business being on the idol stage just won't go away. I have just accepted this flaw in the idol machine.

I am not a teeny bopper I am a grown woman, I own my own business and I voted for Sanjaya numerous times I think he's excellent I love his voice and he carries himself well especially considering his age, he has humility which is refreshing. I would buy his CD and that's why I will keep voting for him, in addition I don't know what exactly makes him a bad singer, he doesn't miss a note he is never off key or "pitchy". He needs to sing with a little more forcefullness, but he's great...in case anyone is wondering...I'm not Indian or Italian and I don't give sympathy votes. Thanks. Oh yeah he has gotten this far without VFTW, he really has fans that aren't teens, but to that I would also like to add what makes their votes not as important as adult votes? What does that say, kids don't count for anything? You think Sanjaya sucks? Well I think your view of how important kids are sucks. They are just as important as you or me and their vote counts...They are not stupid as alot of people seem to suggest, in fact alot of them aren't as tainted and bitter as most adults, they don't have "baggage" yet so their motives are simply this, "do I like this person and will I buy their CD" That is as pure of a vote that I think anyone could hope for. Sorry to go on so long and I certainly don't want to offend anyone, but I don't like people treating kids like their voice shouldn't count or that they are just not that important, that is the problem with alot of the young people...they keep getting told how uninportant they are and then people wonder why so many of them have so many problems...the comments I have heard on AI and on this "Idol Thoughts" is just really demeaning to them.
Thanks.

wow,, annon.. woman with her own business..
I don't recall anyone saying teens are unworthy or unimportant.

You say this is the reason so many of them have 'so many problems' ,,, yet they are still young and 'don't have any baggage' .. which is it?

Makes me wonder just a bit about your introduction..

grown woman with her own business.
