Predicting the Emmys: Lead Actress in a Comedy

For the next two weeks, I will be giving my predictions for the 2007 Emmy Awards. Who was overlooked? Who should win? And who's gonna win?

BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
America Ferrera, Ugly Betty
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Teri Hatcher, Desperate Housewives
Felicity Huffman, Desperate Housewives
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The New Adventures of Old Christine
Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds

Overlooked:
Eva Longoria, Desperate Housewives

Should Win: Mary-Louise Parker

Will Win: America Ferrera

Hatcher doesn't have a shot, and I'd be surprised if either Huffman or Dreyfuss, both former champs in this category, picked up a second trophy for their work this past season on Desperate Housewives and The New Adventures..., respectively. That leaves Parker, an Emmy winner for Angels in America, and newcomers Fey and Ferrera to battle it out. While I personally would give the prize to Parker, whose Weeds would be nothing without her stellar, nuanced work, I think it's going to come down to the two newbies. The industry has a lot of affection for Fey, but Ferrera was the darling of last season, and giving the Ugly Betty star the Emmy will allow the voters to feel both hip and satisfied. Expect a Ferrera victory.
