If you watched American Idol to the bitter end tonight, you heard Ryan and Simon tease a game-changing rule adjustment that "involves the judges more," and that America may or may not be happy about.

To me, a longtime watcher of Idol and countless other reality television shows, that could only mean one thing -- America will determine the Bottom 3 (or possibly 2), and the judges will ultimately choose which individual goes home. There's a possibility the contestants could have to sing again for the judges (the "sing-off" has already been deployed once this season, during the judge's mansion episode), but in my mind there is no doubt the judges will be stepping in in a major way.
I'm not coming up with this out of thin air -- there is definitely a precedent, as this is the way it is done on X-Factor, the show Simon Cowell judges in Britain (and that produced Leona Lewis), as well as the early rounds of the finals on So You Think You Can Dance. And I will add that I can't imagine this rule will be in effect much beyond the Top 7, if it even goes that far. But still, this is a major game-changer.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? On the one hand, contestants sent packing way before their time (Jennifer Hudson, Carly Smithson) would have survived much longer in the competition, and contestants who long overstayed their welcome (Sanjaya Malakar, John Stevens, Haley Scarnato, countless others) would have had their Idol journeys significantly shortened. On the other hand, contestants who the judges didn't much care for at first but America believes in (Jason Castro, Trenyce) won't get a chance to shine.
There's undoubtedly an element of the show's democratic nature being taken away here, but could it actually benefit the show's entertainment value as a result?
I'm getting ahead of myself -- the "twist" has not even yet been officially announced. But it's my pseudo-Idol historian's hunch.

And now comes word what the "twist" of Big Brother 9 will be! According to the press release from CBS:
"When this group of 16 singles enters the house, they will be told they are being matched up with their "soul mate," a stranger who may prove to be their true love or their worst nightmare. Whether there is a love connection or not, once paired up, the Houseguests' life in the game depends on their partner. They must strategize, plot and scheme together as a couple for a chance at the prize. These "lovebirds" will live together as a couple meaning they will sleep in the same bed, hold Head of Household as a couple, be nominated for eviction as a pair, and if the time comes, say their goodbyes together upon eviction."

SPOILER: Details About the Big Brother 9 House
While the cast of Big Brother 9 will not be announced until February 6, some details about the house the contestants will be living in have started to sneak out.
According to realitybbq.com, the house will be "very colorful." Among the features:
-The living room and the kitchen have been turned into a log cabin-type area, with logs, stones, etc.
-The Diary Room has a real tree in it. Ooooooookay.
-The living room has a big, circular couch.
-The HoH room has a surf theme.
-The bedrooms have individual spaces designed for alone time.
-The backyard now has a fire pit and the pool is heated.

The pairings for tonight's Top 20 episode of So You Think You Can Dance, along with the styles of dance that will be performed, have leaked online.

Apparently, the choreography of Shane Sparks, Wade Robson, Mia Michaels (love her!), and Tyce Diorio are all featured, among others.
A few thoughts:
-Ballroom dancers Anya and Pasha both chose ballroom styles, which bodes well for them. Fellow ballroom-ers Faina and Lacey, however, could be in a bit of trouble -- Faina will have to tackle hip hop, and Lacey will have to attempt the one style of dance her brother Benji never did -- contemporary. Should be interesting.
-Hok certainly lucked out selecting hip hop, while D-Trix should be able to apply his funky style to disco. I think b-girl Sara should do alright with pop jazz, as well.
-I'm looking forward to Neil and Lauren's club salsa -- they seem like a well-matched couple, and the dancing could be hot.

Lots More Buzz on Tonight's Finale Extravaganza - Spoilers!
Lots of information is trickling in about tonight's American Idol finale extravaganza.
DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO BE SURPRISED
While there had been rumors circulating that Britney Spears might be showing up at the Kodak Theater tonight, Star magazine is reporting that Green Day will be the surprise guest at tonight's festivities, closing the show a la Prince last year.
Other celebrity performers expected include Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight (who will likely perform with the Top 6 girls), and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry (who will perform with the Top 6 boys). Former Idols Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Hicks will also be on hand to perform.
Rumors continue to circulate that Jordin will perform with the Dreamgirls, and Jennifer Hudson's appearance in the audience last night did little to dispel that gossip. Blake will supposedly perform with Doug E. Fresh.
Oh yeah, and Peter Noone from Herman & The Hermits will be there. I mean, really, enough with the freakin' Hermits already.

What to Expect From Tuesday's Show: Poential Song Choices Revealed
After auditioning in various cities around the country, making it through Hollywood week, three weeks of semifinal auditions, and ten weeks of the Top 12, Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks have made it to the Top 2. So what is in store for them on Tuesday's show?
Details are being leaked as to what the format will be -- one song that they have sung previously in the competition, one new cover song, and then they will each sing the winning song from the songwriting contest.
SPOILER
Rumor has it that Blake will (not surprisingly) reprise "You Give Love a Bad Name," his showstopper from Bon Jovi week, while Jordin will bring back "Broken Wing," which she originally sang during country week.
Blake's new song is apparently Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved' (making it three Maroon 5 songs in two weeks on the show) and Jordin will attempt Christina Aguilera's "Figher" (good luck on that one!) If they turn out to be true they are interesting choices indeed.
As for the new single, American Idol music director Michael Orland calls it "very pretty" and says that "Jordin loves it" in an interview with ew.com. He said he has yet to speak to Blake about it, but that it is "positive and uplifting."

Song Spoilers for Tuesday's American Idol
SPOILER ALERT
The judges choices for the final three American Idol contestants have made their way onto the world wide web (they will sing one song that the judges have chosen, one song of their own choosing, and one song chosen by Clive Davis).
And they are..
Simon has chosen "Wishing on a Star" by Rose Royce for Jordin Sparks.
Paula has chosen "Roxanne" by The Police for Blake Lewis.
Randy has chosen "I Believe in You and Me" for Melinda Doolittle.
I say kudos to Simon and especially Paula, but Randy, what were you thinking? Not only has the song been sung several times on the show before (memorably by Jennifer Hudson in that pink easter dress in the Wildcard round of Season 3), but it kinda plays to Melinda's same-sameness. How about a rock song, or a Tina Turner song? I'm disappointed in you, Randy.
