Daughtry and Underwood Both Slip Out of Top 10

Well, it had to end some time.

For months, Daughtry has held firm in the Top 10 of the album chart, but with six debuts placing in the Top 10, Daughtry slipped seven spots this week to #12. He sold just over 53K copies for the week.

Carrie Underwood, meanwhile, moved just under 40K copies, good enough for the #15 spot. Elliott Yamin, despite having a single ("Wait for You") that is about to crack the Top 10 on the Top 40 chart, did not make the Top 50 in album sales.

The top 5 spots on the chart were taken by T-Pain, Paul McCartney, Rihanna, last week's #1 R. Kelly, and Maroon 5.

Daughtry and Underwood Get Boosts From Idol Appearances

Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood both got a boost from appearing on the two-part finale of American Idol, resulting in both artists finishing in this week's Top 10 on the albums chart.

Daughtry, who performed "Home" at the end of Tuesday's performance show, got a 53% sales bump to finish at #6 with more than 76K albums sold. Underwood, who performed "I'll Stand By You" and was featured in the Beatles medley on Wednesday's show, rose 15% to more than 52K albums sold, good enough for the #8 spot.

Elliott Yamin, meanwhile, continues his chart comeback, moving about 18K albums for the #31 position. His single "Wait for You" has just entered the Top 20 on the pop chart. Go Elliott!

Maroon 5, who performed on the Top 3 Results show, debuted their new album this week at #1 with 427K albums sold. The rest of the Top 5 includes last week's #1 Linkin Park, as well as new albums from Ozzy Osbourne, Young Jeezy Presents U.S.D.A, and The Used.

What to Expect From Tuesday's Show: Poential Song Choices Revealed

After auditioning in various cities around the country, making it through Hollywood week, three weeks of semifinal auditions, and ten weeks of the Top 12, Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks have made it to the Top 2. So what is in store for them on Tuesday's show?

Details are being leaked as to what the format will be -- one song that they have sung previously in the competition, one new cover song, and then they will each sing the winning song from the songwriting contest.

SPOILER

Rumor has it that Blake will (not surprisingly) reprise "You Give Love a Bad Name," his showstopper from Bon Jovi week, while Jordin will bring back "Broken Wing," which she originally sang during country week.

Blake's new song is apparently Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved' (making it three Maroon 5 songs in two weeks on the show) and Jordin will attempt Christina Aguilera's "Figher" (good luck on that one!) If they turn out to be true they are interesting choices indeed.

As for the new single, American Idol music director Michael Orland calls it "very pretty" and says that "Jordin loves it" in an interview with ew.com. He said he has yet to speak to Blake about it, but that it is "positive and uplifting."

Not Melinda! American Idol Results

I'm stunned.

For the past few weeks I've had difficulty deciding which of the three contestants is my favorite, and I've spent a bit of time pondering the issue of which two contestants I would like to see duke it out in the finale next week. In my mind, it was never a question that one of those individuals would be Melinda Doolittle. Since her very first audition, her unwaveringly powerful, rich, soulful voice and humble demeanor have made her a frontrunner all along the way, and it seemed unfathomable that she wouldn't be one of the last two standing.

Until tonight. America, what have you done??

Don't get me wrong, Jordin and Blake are both great, and it should be an exciting finale next week, with two very different performers. And while it would seem that Jordin has the edge going in, I'm betting Blake is going to put up quite a fight.

But back to Melinda. She was the class of the competition, the "seasoned pro" who never missed a beat. With "Since You Been Gone," "My Funny Valentine," "I'm a Woman," "Home," "I've Got Rhythm," "Have a Nice Day," and "Nutbush City Limits" she contributed several of the season's very best performances. Melinda, we'll miss you next week.

And can I just say, take an hour of our time, sure, if you fill it with entertaining hometown videos and performances from the likes of Elliott Yamin and Maroon 5, but please, make sure there is enough time to give a champ like Melinda the send-off she deserves. It should not be rushed into the last 5 minutes of the show. Come on, guys, show some respect.

Back to those hometown visits -- I just love them. They give us just a bit more information on these people we've been obsessing over for the past few months. I mean, think about it -- how much do you actually know about Jordin, aside from the fact that she is young and from Arizona? Or Blake, other than that he is a beatboxing Washingtonian? In the first couple of seasons on the show the Top 12 episodes featured lengthy bio pieces on the contestants, and it helped give us a slightly better sense of who these people are. I wish the show had continued to do that.

Anyways, I loved the hometown videos -- I was reminded that Jordin really is a 17 year old girl (her teary embrace with her best friend was adorable), that Blake is positively oozing personality and is a very loving son, and that Melinda's humility comes from a very genuine place. I even shed a tear during one or two of the videos, watching how much this show has changed these kids' lives. I'm a sap, sue me.

And Elliott Yamin! Woo hoo! With his new hair and teeth he's giving Chris and Blake a run for their money in the cute boy category (well, not quite, but he can sure sing better than both of them!) I kinda wish he had kept his eyes open a little more during "Wait for You," his current hit single, but I sure hope he sells lots of records after this appearance. And Elliott, whose single is currently in the Top 30 on the pop chart, is a reminder that even though she may have been eliminated tonight, Melinda can and most likely will have quite a career ahead of her.

Elliott Yamin, Maroon 5 Appearing on Tomorrow's American Idol

Elliott Yamin, who last year at this time was getting ready to compete in the Top 3 of American Idol, will return to the Idol stage to perform his single "Wait For You." The song is currently flying up the pop charts. For those who have not seen Elliott since he was on the show last season, his new-and-improved appearance should be quite a shock!

Also appearing on tomorrow's show is Maroon 5, who have a CD coming out later this month.

There has also been a rumor that Leona Lewis, the winner of the UK's X Factor competition (also judged by Simon Cowell) will be performing on the show as well. Stay tuned for more news...
