This is a recording of Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) singing an acoustic version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," which was the basis of what David Cook performed on American Idol tonight. It's quite similar, and both are equally affecting. Which do you prefer?

I like David Cook's version better He's been my favorite Idol since day one this year.
Late 40's Mommy
I like David Cook's better. I think he was inspired by Chris Cornell's version, and smoothed up the edges a bit.
Huge props to Chris for transforming Michael Jackson's pop song into something that reaches into your gut and gives it a hard yank. But vocally, I prefer David Cook's rendition... he voice is stronger and has far more range.
Should read Chris Cornell's cover of Robbie Fulks's version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."
I don't have anything against David Cook, he's a good neophite for a grunge starter, even better from other grunge artist. But Chris Cornell is a GENIUS in making, re-making and creating emotional rock audio in terms of it's lyrics and melody. He has been a pioneer for more than a decade already!
