Daniel Day Lewis Dedicates SAG Award to Heath Ledger
The SAG Awards were a pretty ho-hum affair, with anticipated wins from Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men), Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Julie Christie (Away From Her), and best cast for No Country For Old Men. Ruby Dee was a surprise (and, likely, sentimental) winner for Best Supporting Actress, while The Sopranos swept the Television Drama categories and 30 Rock picked up 2 of the 3 Comedy awards (The Office grabbed Best Cast).
As expected, there was lots of pro-WGA talk from the winners, but one acceptance speech stood out from the others. Daniel Day Lewis, in accepting his trophy for Best Actor (There Will Be Blood) dedicated his award to Heath Ledger, calling him one of the actors who has inspired him to overcome the "longing and self doubt" that accompanies taking on a role. Citing his performance in Monster's Ball as well as his work in Brokeback Mountain (which he called "perfect"), Day Lewis gave Ledger a far more meaningful tacked-on-to-the-end photo that closed the retrospective on actors who have died this past year. The looks on the stars sitting in the audience while Day Lewis spoke made it feel like a public memorial service, in a good way.
Very classy, Daniel.

Requiem for Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams
At first they were an unlikely couple. Then they were parents. And now they are no more.
Yep, according to the folks over at US Weekly, Brokeback Mountain stars Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams have decided to separate.
They seemed like an odd couple when word first leaked out that they hooked up on the set of Brokeback, but then she was adorably pregnant, and they looked so cute together, they became one of my favorite celebrity couples.
They are also responsible for one of my favorite scenes in recent film memory -- the scene in the kitchen in Brokeback where Williams' character confronts Ledger's Ennis about what he is really doing on those "fishing trips." There is some real acting genius in that scene.
I have to admit, when they started showing up to promote the movie they seemed very much in love, but also a bit clingy to each other. I can't put my finger on what it was, but there was something a bit desperate about the way they would hold hands and not leave each other's side, almost seemed to need each other too much. And when they were photographed around New York, often with their adorable daughter Mathilda, they just didn't look very happy.
Well, apparently they weren't very happy, and now they have split up. Another one bites the dust.
At least we'll always have Brokeback...
