Ron Rifkin and John Glover to Reunite as Boyfriends on BROTHERS AND SISTERS

EW's Michael Ausiello announced another big Brothers and Sisters casting scoop -- Smallville's Lex Luther, John Glover, will play Saul's new boyfriend.

This marks a reunion of sorts for Ron Rifkin, the actor who plays Saul, and Glover -- the two played former lovers in Jon Robin Baitz' play Paris Letter. Baitz, of course, is a creator of Brothers and Sisters.

Glover has appeared on the Great White Way in The Drowsy Chaperone, Love! Valour! Compassion (for which he received a Tony Award) and much more.

Saul and Glover's character, Andrew, meet at the symphony. Where the romance will lead is anyone's guess. Andrew will be around for at least three episodes.

Luke Grimes Will Play Ryan, the Long Lost Sibling on BROTHERS AND SISTERS

The search is over -- Ryan has been found!

Ending months of speculation, Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reported today that actor Luke Grimes will play the long-lost Walker sibling on ABC's Brothers and Sisters. Friday Night Lights star Scott Porter, The Class star Jason Ritter, and Everwood actor Gregory Smith had also been mentioned for the role.

Grimes' credits include Assasination of a High School President, War Eagle, Arkansas, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and the upcoming Shit Year. Yeah -- he's not exactly a two-time Oscar winner like Sally Field.

Ryan is expected to rear his (not-so-ugly) head in the Walker's life around Thanksgiving time.

Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Houswives and Ugly Betty Will Likely Be Back This Season

Well this is good news!

With encouraging reports coming from the WGA discussions making it more and more likely that a deal will be announced within the week, TV Guide is reporting that several favorite series could be back on the air as early as April.

Michael Ausiello revealed yesterday that Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty and Brothers & Sisters are all planning to go back into production in early month with an eye on creating four-to-six episodes for the end of this season! Newer shows that have already been picked up for next season (Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who) would likely go back into production this summer with an eye on producing episodes for next season. Ausiello suggests that this pattern (older shows producing new episodes for the spring, with new shows returning in the fall) is likely to carry over to CBS, FOX and NBC as well, although he says plans for heavily serialized shows like 24, Heroes and Lost are still being discussed.

New episodes in the spring? Yippee!!

Year End: Ten Best Non-Reality TV Shows of 2007

I would've imagined I'd have tons of options when considering my ten favorite non-reality shows of the year, but when I sat down to make this list, the well was surprisingly dry. Even some of the shows I included (Weeds, Grey's Anatomy) didn't have perfect seasons, but when looked at in the bigger picture, they still made the cut.

Here's my list...

1. Friday Night Lights
2. Brothers & Sisters
3. Mad Men
4. Damages
5. Lost
6. Weeds
7. Desperate Housewives
8. House
9. The Office
10. Grey's Anatomy

Golden Globe Noms Announced Tomorrow -- Here's Who I'm Hoping Scores

The Golden Globe Award nominations will be announced tomorrow morning, and while I'm bracing for myself for the usual list of suspects, there's a few stars and series I'm hoping will make the cut.

Like, for example, Friday Night Lights. After feeling no Emmy love this year, I'm desperately hoping it will score nods for Best Series, Best Actor (Kyle Chandler), Best Actress (Connie Britton) and maybe even a few of the Supporting players (Zach Gilford, Scott Porter, Adrianne Palicki). I realize these nominations are unlikely, but, hey, I can hope, right?

More likely to make the list is Damages, or at least it's star, Glenn Close. I'd also imagine Ted Danson has a good shot at picking up a nomination.

I'd love to see Christina Applegate get recognized for her charming work on Samantha Who?; ditto Rachel Griffiths or Calista Flockhart for Brothers & Sisters (Emmy Award winner Sally Field seems like a shoo-in). Mad Men is also very deserving of a nod for Best Series, Best Actor (Jon Hamm as Don Draper) and Best Supporting Actress (Christina Hendricks as Joan) -- will it make the cut?

What under-the-radar stars or series would you like to see recognized by the Golden Globes?

I LOVE Brothers & Sisters

Slowly but surely, Brothers & Sisters has become from my favorite show on television. Yes, I love-love-love Friday Night Lights, and Grey's Anatomy still has my heart, but Brothers & Sisters is the most consistently well-written, beautifully acted, hilarious, moving show on TV. I'm obsessed.

And last night's episode was probably the best yet. Top-to-bottom, the episode was flawless. Some highlights:

-The whole handling of the intervention -- it was raw, it was painful, and it was real. Justin's nasty comments to his family reeked of authentic family dynamics, and Kitty's speech to Justin that finally got him to see the effect he was having on his family was incredible.

-The Saul/Kevin/Tommy dynamic, culminating in Saul's confession to Nora, and her pleading "Please don't go, Saul." Coming out is a complex process, especially for someone of Saul's age, and I'm glad the show is not presenting a trite portrait of his process, or how the process affects those around him. I'm getting chills just thinking about it. And with Tommy's affair, Balthazar Getty finally has something to do!

-The performances! My god! Dave Annable was better than he has ever been, giving a spot-on performance as an addict not interested in getting better, and then one going through withdrawl. Calista Flockhart was heartbreaking in her speech to Justin ("I'm bleeding and sore, and I'm here..."), while Ron Rifkin gave huge gravitas to his character's struggle. And then there is the genius that is Sally Field. Oh, Sally Field. Every time she opened her mouth in this episode, a tear fell down my cheek. This is hands down the best ensemble on television.

-That final scene, where Nora and Justin realized they need to make adjustments in their relationship if Justin is to become the man he is destined to be. The shot of them sitting by the pool? Oh man, I'm gonna cry again!

Can you tell I loved the show last night??

Predicting the Emmys: Supporting Actress in a Drama

For the next two weeks, I will be giving my predictions for the 2007 Emmy Awards. Who was overlooked? Who should win? And who's gonna win?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A ADRAMA
Lorraine Bracco, The Sopranos
Rachel Griffiths, Brothers & Sisters
Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy
Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy
Aida Turturro, The Sopranos
Chandra Wilson, Grey's Anatomy

Overlooked:
Kelly Bishop, Gilmore Girls
Minka Kelly, Friday Night Lights
Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost
Adrianne Palicki, Friday Night Lights
CCH Pounder, The Shield
Callie Thorne, Rescue Me
Kate Walsh, Grey's Anatomy

Should Win: Rachel Griffiths

Will Win: Rachel Griffiths

This category is dominated by the ladies of The Sopranos and Grey's Anatomy, but it may be the Brothers & Sisters actress who ends up taking home the prize. Despite years of stellar work, and several nominations between them, neither Bracco or Turturro has ever taken home the prize. Neither actress stole the show on the last season of the great HBO drama, though, so this year might see both leaving the ceremony empty handed. Heigl, Oh, and Wilson each had moments to shine throughout the season, but they may end up canceling each other out, paving the way for the very deserving Griffiths (who never won for her stellar work on Six Feet Under) to pick up her first Emmy award.

Idol Thoughts on the Emmy Nominations - Friday Night Lights Snubbed!

Every year I get excited for the Emmy nominations, and every year I am disappointed. Damn Television Academy!

Here are my thoughts on this years nods:

The Very Good
- Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths picking up nominations for Brothers & Sisters
- Denis Leary grabbing a Best Actor nomination for Rescue Me
- TR Knight, Chandra Wilson, Sandra Oh, and Katherine Heigl dominating the supporting categories from Grey's Anatomy
- Neil Patrick Harris getting a first time nomination for How I Met Your Mother
- Wade Robson and Mia Michaels getting recognized for their stellar work on So You Think You Can Dance

The Good
- Entourage as a contender for Best Comedy, and Kevin Dillon joining Jeremy Piven in the Best Supporting Actor race
- Jenna Fisher making her debut in the Emmy hunt for The Office
- The Starter Wife's surprisingly strong showing, including nods for Debra Messing, Joe Mantegna, and Judy Davis
- Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List receiving a second consecutive nomination
- Mary Louise Parker grabbing 2 nominations -- one for Weeds and one for the TV movie The Robber Bride

The Boring
- All of the Boston Legal love. Gimme a break!
- Two and a Half Men instead of Scrubs?
- Tony Shaloub for Monk? Mariska Hargitay for Law and Order: SVU? Patricia Arquette for Medium? Been there, done that.

The Egregious
- No Friday Nights Love? Unacceptable! Where's the Best Drama nomination? Where is Kyle Chandler? Connie Britton? Zach Gilford? I'm livid.
- Where is Lost's Best Drama nomination? Where are Matthew Fox, Elizabeth Mitchell and Dominic Monaghan? (Although it's good to see Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson get recognized for their work)
- What about The Shield? Walton Goggins? CCH Pounder?
- Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham snubbed again!
- Weeds' Justin Kirk missing out on a nomination, despite nods for co-stars Mary Louise Parker and Elizabeth Perkins
- The Wire, the best show on TV, once again completely ignored

Danny Glover Joining The Cast of 'Brothers & Sisters'

He's played opposite Mel Gibson several times , so going toe-to-toe with Sally Field should be a piece of cake!

Michael Ausiello from TVGuide.com is reporting that Danny Glover will be joining the cast of Brothers & Sisters this fall, playing a love interest for Field's Nora Walker. Glover's character will be the campaign manager of Robert McCallister (Rob Lowe), and is expected to appear in 8-10 episodes. Glover's last TV gig was playing Dr. Pratt's father on the past couple of seasons of ER. He also appeared last year in the Oscar nominated film Dreamgirls.

Could this show get any more star-studded? Field, Lowe, Glover, Emmy nominees Calista Flockhart and Rachel Griffiths, Emmy winner Patricia Wettig, and the list goes on. That's quite an assortment of talent!

Predicting the Emmy Nominations: The Dramas

There's still about a month until this year's Emmy Award nominations are announced, but since the 2006-2007 television season has come to an end, I thought it would be fun to try and predict who will and won't make the cut.

This list actually includes two sets of predictions -- who I think should be nominated, and who I think will be nominated. First up -- the prizes for Best Drama, Best Actor and Actress in a Drama, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Drama. The rest of the categories will follow later in the week.

Best Drama Series
Will 24 be rewarded, even though last year's Best Drama had it's worst season yet? Will bad feelings about The Sopranos finale cause it to miss out on a nod? Will The Wire, hands down the best show on TV, or any of FX's dynamite shows (Rescue Me, The Shield, The Riches) make the cut? How about deserving newbies Brothers & Sisters, Friday Night Lights, and The Tudors?

Should Be Nominated:
Friday Night Lights
Grey's Anatomy
Lost
Rescue Me
The Wire

Will Be Nominated:
Friday Night Lights
Grey's Anatomy
Heroes
Lost
The Sopranos

Best Actor in a Drama
Will 24's creative slump mean last year's champ Kiefer Sutherland will be left off the list? Will last year's egregious snub of Hugh Laurie be rectified this year? Will Kyle Chandler be rewarded for his superb work on Friday Night Lights? And how about other stars of freshman series, The Tudors' Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Dexter's Michael C. Hall?

Should Be Nominated:
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
Michael Chiklis, The Shield
Matthew Fox, Lost
Hugh Laurie, House
Denis Leary, Rescue Me

Will Be Nominated:
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
James Gandolfini, The Sopranos
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Hugh Laurie, House
Kiefer Sutherland, 24

Best Actress in a Drama
For the first time in years The West Wing's Allison Janney is not eligible, which opens up at least one new spot on the list. Could that spot be taken by perpetual Emmy snubee Lauren Graham, whose show, Gilmore Girls, has made the switch from Comedy to Drama? Or what about Veronica Mars' Kristen Bell, whose beloved show was killed before it's time? Will former champs Mariska Hargitay and Patricia Arquette make the list again? And which of Brothers & Sisters leading ladies will get a nod?

Should Be Nominated:
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Calista Flockhart, Brothers & Sisters
Lauren Graham, Gilmore Girls
Ellen Pompeo, Grey's Anatomy

Will Be Nominated:
Edie Falco, The Sopranos
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law and Order: SVU
Ellen Pompeo, Grey's Anatomy
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama
You could fill this entire category with the cast of Friday Night Lights, but will Emmy recognize any of the incredibly naturalistic young actors? Will Walton Goggins garner a nod for his shattering work on this season of The Shield? And what about the men of Lost? Dominic Monaghan, Michael Emerson, Terry O'Quinn, Daniel Dae Kim, Ian Cusick, Naveen Andrews, and Jorge Garcia are all worthy, but will any of their names be called on July 19?

Should Be Nominated:
Zach Gilford, Friday Night Lights
Walton Goggins, The Shield
TR Knight, Grey's Anatomy
Dominic Monaghan, Lost
Scott Porter, Friday Night Lights

Will Be Nominated:
Michael Emerson, Lost
Walton Goggins, The Shield
TR Knight, Grey's Anatomy
Dominic Monaghan, Lost
Masi Oka, Heroes

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama
This seems to be the hardest category to call, with almost a dozen deserving candidates in the mix. Chandra Wilson, Katherine Heigl, Kate Walsh, and Sandra Oh are all worthy contenders, but which of Grey's Anatomy's supporting ladies will make the cut? Will Gilmore Girls' Kelly Bishop finally get the recognition she deserves? And will Lost's newest cast member pick up a nomination?

Should Be Nominated:
Kelly Bishop, Gilmore Girls
Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy
Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost
CCH Pounder, The Shield
Callie Thorne, Rescue Me

Will Be Nominated:
Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy
Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost
Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy
CCH Pounder, The Shield
Chandra Wilson, Grey's Anatomy

Idol Thoughts on Brothers and Sisters Season Finale

Once and Again. Everwood. American Dreams. And now...Brothers & Sisters.

I love family dramas, I just can't help it. Fights, tears, laughter -- as far as I'm concerned, good family dramas can provide a more cathartic and enjoyable viewing experience than almost any other form of television. Over the course of this season, Brothers & Sisters has steadily begun the process of carving out it's own space in the pantheon of "greatest family dramas," and with last night's fantastic season finale, I'm starting to think it could soon earn a permanent place in a group that includes the illustrious company listed above.

Last night's episode was just about everything you could hope for in a season finale. Let's take a look at the episode's highlights:

-Sally Field and Calista Flockhart as Nora and Kitty Walker make the best mother/daughter team on television since Lorelai and Rory on Gilmore Girls. Their fight about Kitty moving out of Nora's house (dubbed "the passive aggressive Olympics" by Sarah) was a masterclass in acting -- it was equal parts hysterical, moving, and passionate, and every note was perfectly played. I also loved the moment toward the end of the episode when Nora and Kitty try to catch Justin at the aiport before he takes off, and the way that they said goodbye to him -- Field, in particular, was devastating in the way she played her fears at having to say farewell to her son, not knowing for certain if he will return. As Justin disappeared from sight, the looks on Flockhart and Fields' faces were beautifully heartbreaking.

-We finally got some insight as to what kind of secrets Rebecca has been hiding (her affair with an older man, who later killed himself). It would be easy to dislike her, after what happened with Joe, but it's not quite that simple -- this is a damaged girl, and I love the complicated way Emily van Camp has been playing her, where sometimes you want to hug her, and sometimes you want to slap her across the face.

-After a season that has seen the Walkers face their fair share of tragedy, the final scene, where the entire Walker family jumped into the pool, was so triumphantly joyful that I found tears streaming down my cheeks at the same time I was smiling ear-to-ear. It was especially poignant that this moment of exuberance was taking place in the swimming pool, the same site where William Walker died in the pilot episode. Those Walkers have come a long way!

-Can we talk about the cute boys on this show? As if Dave Annable, Balthazar Getty, Matthew Rhys, and Rob Lowe weren't enough, now we've got Eric Winter as Senator McCallister's gay, minister brother? Oh my goodness -- I'm not sure how much more hotness I can handle! And is Kevin Walker not the luckiest man on earth -- where does he find these gorgeous guys to date?

-Finally, I love when a show leaves you with a few loose-ends that will carry over to next season without having to do so in a heavy-handed cliffhanger way. Obviously we will be waiting to see what happens to Justin in Iraq, but this episode also set up the possibility that Julia is suffering from post-partum depression; that Kevin and Jason McCallister might have an entertaining courtship ahead of them; and, most interestingly, that Saul might have a homosexual past (and future?) The dialogue between Saul and his friend left little confusion that they had at one time been intimate, and between Saul's bachelor status, his general fussiness, and his awkward relationship with Holly, it would not be a complete surprise to find out that he is, in fact, gay. It should be fascinating to see how the show deals with this revelation.

All in all, this was exactly the kind of season finale I was hoping for. I can't wait for the fall to see what happens with the Walkers next.

Grown-up Ned puts his ability to good use, not only touching dead fruit and making it ripe with everlasting flavor, but working with an investigator to crack murder cases by asking the deceased to name their killers. But the tale gets complicated, as all tales do, when Ned brings his childhood sweetheart, Chuck, back from the dead and keeps her alive.
