Jonathan Groff to Join Spring Awakening Co-Star Lea Michele on Glee

Well who didn't see this coming?

EW's Michael Ausiello reports that Jonathan Groff will join his Spring Awakening co-star Lea Michele for 5-6 episodes this spring on the hit Fox show Glee, playing the lead singer of rival show choir Vocal Adrenaline. Groff, who received a Tony nomination for playing Melchior in Awakening, recently appeared in Central Park in The Bacchae, and onscreen as Michael Lang in Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock.

According to series creator Ryan Murphy, Groff's character is “a male diva…a miva.” He will also be a potential love interest for Michele's character Rachel Berry. We know how steamy their Spring Awakening love scenes were -- can there be more in store on Glee?

Like, One Republic meets Jason Mraz AWESOME. It's a cover of a song by a band called The Scripts, but since no one's ever heard of them, or the song, who the heck cares? The song is (have I mentioned?) AWESOME!

Idol Thoughts Interviews So You Think You Can Dance's Nigel Lythgoe

I just got off the phone with Nigel Lythgoe, and here's a few nuggets of information he shared about Season 6 of So You Think You Can Dance:

-Because of scheduling issues, the season finale episode will feature the Top 6, instead of the usual Top 4. This was to avoid starting with a "Top 18". By my estimations, this would put the finale on December 16, 2009.

-Adam Shankman joining the show does not mean the end of guest judges -- in fact, Jennifer Lopez, a big fan of the show, has expressed interest in joining the panel, and Nigel still hopes to get Paula Abdul from time to time.

-If the show is not successful in the fall Nigel expects it will return to the summer -- he can't imagine Fox would throw the baby out with the bathwater.

-Nigel thinks this past season was booooooooooooring, and though the dancers were technically adept, he thought they were seriously lacking in personality.

-He thinks Danny Tidwell is the best dancer the show has had, and thinks Travis Wall was a better dancer than Benji Schwimmer, and, in this past season, Brandon was a better dancer than Jeanine.

So You Think You Can Dance is taking over the world!

First Lacey Schwimmer, Dmitry Chaplin and Chelsie Hightower infiltrated Dancing with the Stars, Travis Wall returned triumphantly as a choreographer on the show, Kherington Payne got cast in the remake of Fame and Neil Haskell showed up Off-Broadway in Altar Boyz and on Broadway in 9 to 5. Now Season 4's Will Wingfield will be the new "Graffiti Pete" in In the Heights!

I saw Will, who was egregriously kicked off in the Top 8 of SYTYCD two seasons ago, this summer at City Center Encore's The Wiz, where he played the head monkey. Though he didn't have much to do, he danced fabulously, and certainly had more energy than star Ashanti. I mean...

Also coming to the Great White Way this fall is Season 3 runner-up Danny Tidwell, who will be a featured dancer in Memphis. Love!

Now we just gotta find a place for Katee Sheean and Janette Manrara!

So You Think You Can Dance Season Six Top 20 Spoilers - Who Made the Cut?

We just finished So You Think You Can Dance Season Five, and already its time to focus on Season Six. I know there's a risk of too much of a good thing, but I, for one, am thrilled we get two seasons of my favorite reality show back-to-back. Bring on the dance!

Sytycdism.com is reporting some spoilers of which dancers made it to Las Vegas, and as of today, they're saying the Top 20 has not been officially selected. For now, then, take a look at the list of folks who made the cut, and who got cut. You know the deal -- if you want to be surprised when Season 6 debuts on September 9th, don't look!

Theater Thoughts: "His Greatness" at The Fringe Festival

Let me admit something up front -- even though I'm a total theater geek, I'm not a 'festival guy.' Every year The Fringe Festival in NYC comes and goes, and I barely pay attention. So please feel free to take what I have to say about His Greatness, a play by Daniel MacIvor receiving its US premiere with a grain of salt.

Having said that, theater is theater, right? So it shouldn't matter that I'm not a 'festival guy,' right? Right?

Anyways...

His Greatness is "based on a potentially true story" about "two days in the last years of the life of playwright Tennessee Williams," as the famous playwright drinks, does drugs, suffers scathing reviews, emotionally abuses his co-dependent assistant and sleeps with a hustler, whom he fancies will become his new muse. "Potentially" is the key word in that press release blurb -- all slander issues are sideswiped but not actually naming the lead character "Tennessee." Though Arthur Miller is name-checked, and Edward Albee is quoted, Williams is never called by name in the show, and is referred in the program only as "the Playwright." Got it?

Williams is certainly a complex enough historical personality to be worthy of exploration, but unfortunately this show just doesn't do him justice (and not just because there are repeated mentions of him shitting his pants when he's drunk). What we learn here is that he drinks, is emotionally tortured and possibly insane -- something anyone with a cursory knowledge of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof could probably gather. I had heard rumblings that there was controversial material here, but aside from the fact that it paints Williams in a rather depressingly sad light, and features a young hustler in red underwear (see photo above), there wasn't much titillation happening onstage at the Cherry Lane Theater. Though I am a fan of Williams, and am interested in the man behind Maggie the Cat and Blanche du Bois, the general feeling I walked away with was "who cares?"

I can't blame the actors for my apathy -- Peter Goldfarb (as Williams), Dan Domingues (as The Assistant) and Michael Busillo are certainly game, but they can't overcome the tepid material. Goldfarb's accent goes in and out, and he doesn't bear much of a resemblance to the playwright, but other than that he's totally competent (if a bit one-note), as are Busillo and Domingues. And though Tom Gualtieri's direction isn't horrible, he doesn't do much to enhance the material. If you're looking for a Williams fix, read one of his plays -- they are sexier, more human and much more complex than this show about his a couple of days at the end of his life.

Now back to my un-Festival-ness -- the sold-out audience I was with seemed to very much enjoy the show. Is it perhaps because many of them are frequent Festival-goers, and His Greatness, while no major work, exceeds most of the dreck they've seen in quality? Who knows? But as I've said, feel free to take this review with a grain of salt. Just don't "wage war" on this critic, as the young hustler suggests Williams does after his play gets panned in Vancouver -- I won't care enough to fight.

Dancing with the Stars Thoughts: Predicting the Order They Will Fall

This, of course, is a totally fruitless exercise, since I've never seen these people dance before (or, for that matter, even heard of some of them), but why not handicap the Dancing with the Stars field, now that the pairings of celebrities and professional partners have been officially announced? C'mon, it'll be fun!

NB: My undying love for Chelsie Hightower may impact where I place her on this list. I can't help it -- I'm human. I love her.

I'm gonna put them in order of first eliminated to winner. Here goes!

16. Kathy Ireland and Tony Dovolani
The model always goes first. Think Paulina Porizkova.

15. Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough
When there's two models in the group, the one who doesn't have Derek Hough as her partner is out the door right in front of the one who does. Sorry Joanna!

14. Ashley Hamilton and Edyta Sliwinksa
Poor Edyta -- always the tan, tan also-ran.

13. Tom DeLay and Cheryl Burke
The novelty is bound to wear off by Week 4, right? Not this time Cheryl.

12. Chuck Liddell and Anna Trebunskaya
I'm thinking the cross-over of WWE and Dancing with the Stars fans is probably pretty slight. We'll see...

11. Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel
Sharon Osbourne might have a chance at winning. Kelly? Not so much.

10. Natalie Coughlin and Alec Mazo
The Dancing folks do love their Olympians (Apolo Anton Ono, Shawn Johnson), but since his victory in Season 1 Alec has been a bit of a bad-luck charm. We'll see if Natalie can change that.

9. Macy Gray and Jonathan Roberts
Jonathan is booooo-ooo-ring, but Macy should bring enough squeaky-voiced drama for the two of them.

8. Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova
The footballer-s usually last awhile, but without a partner with a built-in fanbase, a midseason exit sounds about right.

7. Louie Vito and Chelsie Hightower
I've already acknowledged I have no objectivity when it comes to Chelsie. Love does that to you.

6. Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff
These two could be the best dancers in the bunch, and might bring some real heat to the floor.

5. Debi Mazar and Maksim Chmerkoviskiy
I can't wait for the behind-the-scenes screaming matches between these two! It'll probably be more dramatic than anything that happens on the dance floor!

4. Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Ballas
Two-time champ Mark doesn't have a shot at title #3 with Clarissa, but at least he'll have it all explained!

3. Mark Dacasos and Lacey Schwimmer
Lacey deserves a good showing after putting up with Steve-O this year, but a third place finish is probably the best she can hope for.

RUNNER-UP: Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson
I just couldn't award Donny the win -- he wants it too bad. Still, long-suffering Kym definitely deserves a chance to hoist the trophy over her head.

WINNER: Mya and Dmitry Chaplin
Dmitry gets paid back for putting up with Holly Madison last season, and Mya gets the hottest pro on the show. Sounds like a win-win for the win to me!

TV Thoughts: "Hung"

Finally got around to watching the series premiere of "Hung" last night -- yes, about a million years after it premiered. I was dragging my feet to start watching the show, having read some so-so reviews, and wondering whether after watching Weeds and Nurse Jackie if I could handle many more half hour dramedies.

I'm glad I took the plunge, though, as I found myself sucked in pretty rapidly. It's sorta like 17 Again if Matthew Perry became a male escort instead of being transformed into Zac Efron. I mean, not really at all, but both feature former athletes whose lives have gone to shit. All of the double entendre references to Thomas Jane's penis were a bit over the top -- did we really have to have the word "tool" repeated over and over again? -- but ultimately it's a clever premise that was pretty well executed. I can't say I'm a huge Thomas Jane fan (he's handsome, I guess, but a little bland for my taste), but I do love me some Jane Adams and Anne Heche, even though the latter had nothing to do in the premiere episode except scream like a shrew. (Fun fact -- Jane is married to Patricia Arquette!)

Though I know we'll never see his "gift," I'll keep watching to see what happens...

Movie Thoughts: "Last Chance Harvey"

Watched "Last Chance Harvey" last night, starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. God I love me some Emma Thompson -- the woman radiates warmth, intelligence, humor and all things good. She was in fine form during the flick, as was Dustin, and the two shared a genuine chemistry, but all in all the movie was a bit of a letdown -- it all just felt a little trite. As my boyfriend asked, "With two stars like these, why couldn't they have come up with a better movie?"

Still, not a total waste of time -- there were moments of real sweetness, as these two lost souls connected in ways neither thought they were still capable of. Maybe next time the two Oscar winners are cast in a movie together they'll be given some more substantial material to work with.

It was good to see Kathy Baker, though! True, she hasn't played a good role since Picket Fences went off the air a million years ago, but I can't help but smile when she appears onscreen. Richard Schiff, as well -- true, he's always playing a version of Toby from West Wing, but I still love him.

X-Factor's Danyl Johnson - Bisexual?

Below is a video of X-Factor contestant Danyl Johnson, who Simon Cowell said gave the best first audition he's ever seen. I mean...it's good, sure, and the guy certainly has stage presence, but methinks Cowell overstates just a bit.

I'm more interested in a quote he gave to London's The Mirror, in which he declares he dates both women and men, and says, "I don’t like to conform or be put into one box or another and if I’m honest all the judges are good-looking. If I like someone’s personality it doesn’t really matter what they look like or what sex they are."

Looks like Adam Lambert is not the only singing contestant who likes the fellas!

Zac Efron -- New Pictures, Shirtless and Ripped

I wasn't feeling Zac Efron's new haircut, but if he's going to accessorize it with abs and pecs that look like this, I guess I really can't complain.

And let it be said the boy is a tease -- he is pulling down those pants to show off his pubes. And what is that bulge he's got going on in those sweat pants of his? If you're going to taunt like that, Zac, you might as well just take it all of and show us what you've got.

AMERICAN IDOL Top 9 Recap and Elimination Prediction

I was really looking forward to last night's episode of American Idol, to see if this year's crew could tackle contemporary songs and demonstrate to the audience where in the pop music landscape they would fall. With two notable exceptions, however, I was quite disappointed -- poor song choices and karaoke-esque performances abounded. There's no doubt we've got a Top 9 brimming with talent, but are they losing steam about halfway through the competition?

Before I get to my elimination predictions, here's my rankings of the Top 9:

2. Adam Lambert, A-
3. Danny Gokey, B+
4. Allison Iraheta, B-
5. Lil Rounds, B-
6. Scott Macintyre, C

Ok, on to the elimination prediction...

Green Zone - Totally Safe
Kris Allen, who I develop a bigger crush on by the week, once again showed he's taking this thing seriously, reinventing "Ain't No Sunshine" into a self-accompanied showstopper. Sure, this guy doesn't have the best voice in the competition, but 4 solid performances in a row mean he's gonna be in it for the long haul.

Ditto Adam Lambert, who gave a totally joyful performance of "Play that Funky Music" that allowed him to show off the lighter side of his personality and his killer voice. In my mind, if Adam doesn't win the whole thing, America is most definitely not voting for the strongest vocalist.

I'm also going to include Danny Gokey in this group, even though he's been slipping the past few weeks. After last week's "clumsy" showing, his choice to sing a Rascal Flatts song was an inspired one, and he delivered it with gusto. While it wasn't nearly as musically interesting as Kris or Adam, it should be more than enough for him to advance to the Top 8.

Yellow Zone - On Shaky Ground
Mark my words -- Matt Giraud is going to have a nervous breakdown live on TV. The poor guy clearly wants to be a rockstar, but the judges (and, likely, his fans at home) would prefer he stick to the Timberlake-esque tunes. I think he'll be okay this week, though, as his Bottom 2 scare should motivate his fans (even those who didn't love his rendition of The Fray's Adult Contemporary hit) to pick up the phone. Still -- get the straight jacket ready.

Then there's Lil Rounds, who I consider the competition's biggest disappointment thus far. There's no doubt she can sing, but this girl has absolutely no originality. "I Surrender"? Really? I love the song (especially when Kelly Clarkson killed it back in Season 1), but I though Lil was this year's R&B diva. How about showing some spunk, as opposed to singing every note exactly as it was written? Still, I think she'll live to sing another week.

Red Zone -- Danger Danger Danger!
That leaves Scott Macintyre, Anoop Desai, Megan Joy, and my beloved Allison Iraheta in the danger zone. Allison, you say? How could that be? Well, after last week's strong showing I'm afraid her fans may take her safety for granted, and her just so-so performance of No Doubt's "Don't Speak" may not have been enough to remind them she needs their votes.

As for Scott, will a leather jacket and a new (pompadour) 'do be enough to spare him? While I was bored to tears by his performance, there's no doubt this guy knows who he is (an Adult Contemporary artist through and through), and that's more than we can say for...

Anoop Desai. Oh, Anoop, what were you thinking choosing Usher's "Caught Up"? When are you going to get it through your head that you are not an R&B star? Perhaps a trip to the Bottom 2 (or, worst, an elimination) will finally convince him to stick to the ballads and leave the "entertaining" to Mr. Lambert.

Then there's Megan, who I really did adore during the first couple of weeks in the competition. Unfortunately, in the last couple of performances she has displayed absolutely zero performance savvy, and on top of that she's now coming off a bit cocky. (If I hear her mention "my fans" one more time I'm going to scream!) I think it may be time to put this quirky songbird down.

Ok, I'll Say It -- The New Judges Save/Sing-For-Your-Life Is Icky!

As if it wasn't bad enough that America voted off the talented and lovely Alexis Grace on last night's American Idol, leaving the far less talented Michael Sarver in the competition and on the tour, the poor girl wasn't even allowed to exit the show with dignity. Instead, she was forced to "sing for her life," while the judges decided whether or not she was worthy of using their "save" on.

Gross!!!!!

Now, I can't say I disagree with the judges' choice not to use the save, but forcing Alexis to desperately make her case, just moments after being told she received the fewest amount of votes in the Top 11, was just wrong. What happened to the lovely send-off video and kind words from the judges? Gone. Instead, she had to plead her case to the judges via the very song they said they don't think she should have chosen, and then listen to Simon tell her "You were good, but not good enough."

I repeat -- gross!!

There's got to be a better way for the end of the show to go down, right? Right????

Are the DANCING WITH THE STARS Professionals Now More Famous Than Their "Celebrity" Partners?

A thought occurred to me over the past two weeks of watching Dancing with the Stars, as I found myself nervous that new pro Chelsie Hightower would be eliminated the first week out, and feeling for Lacey Schwimmer as she stood alone receiving comments without her partner Steve-O -- are the professional dancers on the show now more famous than their "celebrity" partners?

Think about it --

-Three of the pros (Chelsie, Lacey, and Dimitri Chapin) amassed sizable fanbases on So You Think You Can Dance (a show that gets a lot more viewers than Holly Madison' Girls Next Door).
-Edyta Sliwinska has been on eight cycles of the show
-Cheryl Burke has won twice and is a tabloid fixture
-Julianne Hough has a country CD and has been nominated for several awards
-Former champs Derek Hough and Mark Ballas have a new CD in stores
-Maksim Chmerkowskiy and Karinna Smirnoff are engaged, and constantly in the press

Now, this is not to say that some of this year's "stars" are, in fact, accomplished -- no one can take away Shawn Johnston's gold medal or Lil' Kim's notoriety or Laurence Taylor's football records. But in the Dancing with the Stars universe, there is no doubt that some of the pros have eclipsed their partners in terms of viewer affection.

Which begs the question -- is the playing field now stacked in favor of the pros who have their own fanbases? Lacey, Chelsie and Dimitri have fans who are used to voting for them -- does this, as a result, help Steve-O, Ty and Bridget? Will Julianne and Chuck last in the competition because of the audience's affection for Julianne? Will Denise Richards hang around because viewers can't get enough of Maks?

And does it even matter?

American Idol Top 11 Recap and Elimination Prediction

I'll be the first to admit that I was skeptical about this year's talent, but after two solid weeks of performance shows, I've gotta say -- the talent pool on this year's American Idol just might actually be the best yet.

Of course, let's acknowledge that there are 10 weeks left in the competition, and though contestants like Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert, Allison Irahata and Alexis Grace have shown they have talent in spades, and others like Kris Allen, Anoop Desai and Matt Giraud have proven themselves capable of delivering top-notch performances, we've still got a lot of ground to cover. And while there hasn't been a trainwreck yet, there have also not been jaw-dropping displays of vocal virtuosity (save, perhaps, Adam's "Black and White" last week).

Still -- so far, so good.

Before I get to the elimination prediction, here are my rankings for the Top 11:

On to the elimination predictions...

Green Zone - Totally Safe
Danny Gokey played right into his Christian rock comfort zone last night, and as a result, he should be just fine this week. Ditto Adam Lambert, whose goodwill from last week should power him through to the Top 10 despite the fact that he took a risk that didn't quite pay off. (Say what you will about the guy, but he definitely stayed true to his own sense of artistry.) Then there's the three gentlemen who tapped into their tender sides -- Kris Allen, Matt Giraud and Anoop Desai. All three sounded great and really connected with the songs they chose, and all three should have no problem advancing in the competition.

Yellow Zone - On Shaky Ground
There's no denying Lil Rounds has a killer voice, but her decision to "respect" the country song she choose, as opposed to infusing it with her own R&B flavor, made the end result pretty bland. She should be fine, but she better step it up in weeks to come or she'll find herself in the Red Zone.

Red Zone - Danger Danger Danger!
I've put five contestants into the Red Zone this week, and truly any of them is in danger of going home. Allison Irahata was fantastic last night (as you can see above, she was my third favorite of the evening), but I'm concerned that her consistency may actually be working against her -- could she fall into the Bottom 3 tonight, or even worse be eliminated? Alexis Grace has also given three strong performances thus far in the competiton, but the judges lukewarm reaction to her rendition of "Jolene" could spell trouble.

Then there's Megan Corkrey, who may just be saved by the revelation that she performed with the flu. I'm actually quite fond of this girl, quirky dancing and wonky notes and all, but I'm getting the sense that America may be tiring of her. Will they kick her while she's down and eliminate her this week?

That leaves Michael Sarver and Scott Macintyre. Sarver adequately performed Garth Brooks' tounge-twister (previously performed on Idol by Josh Gracin and Latoya London), but going first and not doing anything spectacular with the song may be doom for the oil rigger. As for Macintyre, he sounded just fine, but he's so Adult Contemporary boooooring that I'm having trouble imagining people running to their phones to vote for him. Neither gentleman is a bad singer, but either could easily go home this week.

Kelly Clarkson Is Back At #1!

Don't count Kelly Clarkson out...with her new album "All I Ever Wanted" flying off the shelves, she's back and better than ever!!

Hits Daily Double is reporting that Kelly sold 254K copies of her fourth album this past week, easily topping the Album Chart. While this number is slightly less than the first week totals for her last two albums, the success of lead-off single "My Life Would Suck Without You," along with four or five potential singles on the disc, mean this album should be selling well for quite some time.

And can I just say -- I love the album! "Cry," "Ready," and "I Do Not Hook Up" are my current favorite tracks, but I'm also diggin' on "Don't Let Me Stop You," "All I Ever Wanted," "I Want You," and "Long Shot." What am I saying -- I love the whole damn thing!

The Dream grabbed the #2 spot on this week's album chart with 147K discs sold, followed by last week's #1 U2, J. Holiday, and Taylor Swift.

American Idol Top 13 Recap and Elimination Prediction

The first round of the American Idol season 8 finals is over! Before I get to elimination predictions, here's how I'd rank the Top 13:

You know it's a good week when even the lowest score is a C! Good job Top 13!

Now, on to who is going home tonight -- much complicated by the rule change (read POSSIBLE SPOILER - THE SCOOP ON THE AMERICAN IDOL RULE CHANGE). First let's identify who is totally safe, who is on shaky ground, and who is in the danger zone.

Green Zone - Totally Safe
Get used to seeing these three names in the Green Zone -- Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert and Lil Rounds. Lambert was on fire last night, showing off his vocal fireworks and his total control of the stage -- this guy is definitely in it for the long haul. Gokey also had a good night -- he sounded great, and he toned down the dramatics around his wife's recent death, in the process cementing his frontrunner status. And though Rounds had the dreaded first performance slot of the night, her assured singing and poise on the stage ensure her at least a few more weeks in the competition.

Yellow Zone - On Shaky Ground
While Anoop Desai had arguably the worst performance last night, turning in a total karaoke showing, his extremely large fanbase will make sure he's not in danger of elimination so early on. Scott Macintyre, meanwhile, showed us that he really is better when he's behind the piano, even if he isn't the most dynamic of the performers on the show. Alexis Grace, while oversinging a bit at times, proved her semifinal showing wasn't a fluke -- this girl has pipes and attitude, and could end up a force to be reckoned with. And then there's Matt Giraud, who I'm still not totally sold on. He definitely seems more comfortable pounding those keys, but how long until his breathy singing and wavering vibrato start getting annoying? I'm giving it two weeks.

Red Zone - Danger Danger Danger!
The five members of this group did not necessarily give the worst performances last night -- in fact, some of them were in my Top 5 for the night. As counterintuitive as it sounds, at this early stage in the finals it's almost more important than you stand out than that you sing well. Thus, I've got to put Allison Irahata in this category. She was fantastic last night, but I'm not quite sure she convinced viewers to head to their phones and power-dial. Ditto Megan Corkrey -- unlike the judges, I adored her rendition of "Rockin' Robin" and think her unique vocal stylings are essential for the competition, but I'm worried the majority of Americans might disagree with me.

Then there's cutie Kris Allen, who was totally charming strumming his guitar and crooning Jason Mraz-style -- but was he too lowkey to stand out? Michael Sarver was way better than I expected him to be, but he still strikes me much more as a "good singer" than a potential American Idol. As for Jorge Nunez, is there any doubt after last night's performance that he's corny and old fashioned? And Jasmine Murray, while totally adorable, continues to choose the wrong songs for her voice (and age), and could find herself in serious trouble tonight.

FINAL PREDICTION
Predictions need to happen in two waves this year -- guessing who America put into the Bottom 3, and then imagining who the judges will send home from that group.

I think the fangirls will save Kris, and Megan has enough fans to keep her out of real danger for at least one more week, meaning...

Possible Spoiler: The Scoop on the American Idol Rule Change

If you watched American Idol to the bitter end tonight, you heard Ryan and Simon tease a game-changing rule adjustment that "involves the judges more," and that America may or may not be happy about.

To me, a longtime watcher of Idol and countless other reality television shows, that could only mean one thing -- America will determine the Bottom 3 (or possibly 2), and the judges will ultimately choose which individual goes home. There's a possibility the contestants could have to sing again for the judges (the "sing-off" has already been deployed once this season, during the judge's mansion episode), but in my mind there is no doubt the judges will be stepping in in a major way.

I'm not coming up with this out of thin air -- there is definitely a precedent, as this is the way it is done on X-Factor, the show Simon Cowell judges in Britain (and that produced Leona Lewis), as well as the early rounds of the finals on So You Think You Can Dance. And I will add that I can't imagine this rule will be in effect much beyond the Top 7, if it even goes that far. But still, this is a major game-changer.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? On the one hand, contestants sent packing way before their time (Jennifer Hudson, Carly Smithson) would have survived much longer in the competition, and contestants who long overstayed their welcome (Sanjaya Malakar, John Stevens, Haley Scarnato, countless others) would have had their Idol journeys significantly shortened. On the other hand, contestants who the judges didn't much care for at first but America believes in (Jason Castro, Trenyce) won't get a chance to shine.

There's undoubtedly an element of the show's democratic nature being taken away here, but could it actually benefit the show's entertainment value as a result?

I'm getting ahead of myself -- the "twist" has not even yet been officially announced. But it's my pseudo-Idol historian's hunch.

Random American Idol Musings: Adam, Kris, Matt, Lil, Anoop and Ricky (!!)

Since I've been MIA since the start of Idol season, I thought I'd share some thoughts from the past couple of months:

Though I don't think she's offered anything particularly noteworthy thus far, I'm kinda digging Kara DioGuardi. In fact, I'd give Randy Jackson the boot and keep Kara!
Is it just me, or has Ryan Seacrest been looking kinda cute this season?
While I was diggin' on Matt Giraud during Hollywood week, I'm already over him. Note to Matt: smugness ain't pretty.
I miss Ricky Braddy already. That kid could sing!
Lil Rounds is gonna have to really blow it out to live up to that Fantasia/Mary J Blige connection. So far I'm just not seeing it.
I have a huge crush on Chris Richardson...I mean Kris Allen. He's dreamy!
I think Adam Lambert has a sick voice, and unlike some of the judges, I couldn't be happier to have a Broadway belter on the show.
I think Anoop is totally likable and charming, but I can't help remembering he comes from a college a capella group, and that makes me nervous. Just saying.
Michael Sarver does absolutely nothing for me. Ditto Jorge Nunez and Scott Macintyre.

Of course I'm leaving out about 10K other thoughts I've had, but this is all I can thing of right now. More, surely, to come.

Forecasting Idol: Which One (or Two) of the Top 13 Will Go Home First?

Well, I've been quiet during the first two months of American Idol, but I can't keep my opinions to myself any longer! (Click here to read I'M BACK -- FOR REAL THIS TIME).

To kick off my return to the world of Idol commentary, I thought I'd take a look at the Top 13 and try to predict which one (or, based on the fact that there may be a double elimination tonight, two) contestants will receive the distinction of being the first (and possibly second) to get sent packin'. Keep in mind I am writing this without knowing the performance order, the contestants' song choices, and, of course, how well (or badly) they will perform.

Here goes!

TOTALLY SAFE

Danny Gokey
Sure, controversy has brewed around this recent widow, but I think he's heard the message loud and clear -- steer clear of the dead wife talk, and stick to the singing. There's no doubt this guy has a killer voice, and as long as he lets the viewers focus on that, there's no way he won't be around for awhile.

Adam Lambert
Those somewhat shocking photos of his man-on-man tongue kissing might have meant doomsday for a lesser performer, but Adam's ridiculously good voice should continue earning him enough fans to overcome the homophobic naysayers that claim America can't have a gay Idol. Adam seems totally comfortable with who he is, which should help put viewers at ease, and allow them to be entertained by this fantastic vocalist.

Allison Irahata
While one performance does not an Idol make, Allison's great take on Heart's "Alone" has earned her enough goodwill (and a bit of frontrunner status), that even a stumble during Michael Jackson week won't be too troubling for the pink haired teenager.

Anoop Desai
In some ways the Wildcard contenders come into the Top 13 with the biggest advantage -- America has heard them sing twice. Anoop, particularly, will reap the benefits of this, as his infectious performance of "My Perogerative" reminded voters what they love about him, and that love is not likley to disipate any time soon.

MOSTLY SAFE

Scott Macintyre>
I'm still not sold on the vocal stylings of Idol's first blind contestant, but there's no doubt the guy is likable. He's got a free pass to at least the Top 10.

Kris Allen
I know Kris isn't the best singer this show has ever seen, but he's so darn cute! You best believe I'm not the only one who thinks so, and in a crowded field of 13, expect his cutie patootie-ness (and not bad voice) to stand out.

Lil Rounds
Perhaps I'm jaded by the top-notch R&B divas this show has produced in the past (J-Hud, Fantasia, Latoya London -- heck, even Trenyce!), but Lil just hasn't blown me away yet. That may change, but I wouldn't call her a sure-thing just yet.

Matt Giraud
His performance last week was MILES better than his initial semifinal audition, but I just can't get his wobbly version of Coldplay's latest single out of my mind. I think he'll make it through this week, but he'll have to string together some solid performances to really make a dent in the competition.

IN TROUBLE

Alexis Grace
Her week one semifinal performance was undoubtedly strong, but that was a long time ago -- will America remember how much they like this pixie-ish wailer? She's going to need a couple more strong performances if she wants to be more than a week one flash-in-the-pan.

Jorge Nunez
His strong voice and endearing tears helped him beat out Ju'not Joyner for a spot in the Top 13, but his style is so old-fashioned, I just can't picture him every getting to the front of the pack. One bad performance and this guy could be gone.

Michael Sarver
Easily the least inspired performer in the Top 13, this guys is, in my eyes, the least likely to crack the Top 10. How far can being an oil rigger really propel him?

Megan Corkrey
I love this girl's unique voice and winning smile, but I'm not so sure the rest of America does. As one of only five women she's likely to stand out, but she's going to have to start amassing fans quickly if she wants to last awhile.

Jasmine Sullivan
This year's "huh?!?" finalist would seem to be the easy pick to go home first, and if Season 3 is any indication, when Leah Labelle creapt into the Top 12 only to be eliminated a week later, we may not be seeing Jasmine for very long. Consider Carmen Rasmussen in Season 2, who was also a "huh?!?" choice -- she ended up cracking the Top 6. Which way will Jasmine fall?

AND...
So, there it is. While Megan and Jorge are on thin ice, I think it will ultimately be Michael Sarver (if one goes), or Michael and Jasmine Sullivan (if two get sent home).

I'm Back -- For Real This Time

I took some time away. And now I'm back.

Here's the thing -- after two years of writing this blog, it was sometimes feeling a bit like an obligation. And, as I wrote at the beginning of this year, my professional and personal lives are quite busy right now, so the blog got pushed to the back burner.

HOWEVER...

Since this season of American Idol began, I have been desperately missing my outlet -- my chance to share my crazy thoughts about this crazy show. I've also been searching for intelligent commentary on the show, and found it VERY difficult to find. I love Michael Slezak over at Entertainment Weekly, and Joesplacebog.com has good spoilers, but where are all the fun lists? The fascinating analyses?

Now, I am definitely NOT trying to say that every word I type is sheer brilliance -- far from it. But I missed writing about the show (and other shows, like The Biggest Loser -- which I am LOVING -- Dancing with the Stars, Survivor, Amazing Race and more), and I missed the comments and dialogue with my readers.

I may not post as often as I once did, but from here on out I plan to share at least some of my thoughts with you all.

So...I've been a bad, bad blogger.

Here's the thing -- I've got a job. And a beautiful boyfriend. And a life. I had reached a point somewhere in the middle of last year where blogging ceased to be fun, and was feeling more and more like an obligation.

So I took a break.

And now I'm back, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated! You'll notice that things here at Idol Thoughts will be a little different from here on out -- I'll still be bringing you news and gossip from the worlds of television, film, music, theater and pop culture, but I'll be simplifying the format a little bit, so you don't have to go searching for what you're looking for. Updates may not be as bountiful as they once were, but hopefully they'll be a bit more substantive. And while I'll still put up a picture of a cute, shirtless boy when I see him, don't expect that to be the thrust of the site. I mean, I like looking at cute, shirtless boys as much as the next guy or gal, but the satisfaction it brings to post is not quite what it once was. Sue me.

The reality television/Broadway connection continues, as it was announced today that Step It Up and Dance winner Cody Green will play Riff in the new Broadway revival of West Side Story.

Green will be joined by A Catered Affair's Matt Cavenaugh as Tony, Josefina Scaglione as Maria, In the Heights' Karen Olivo as Anita and George Akram as Bernardo. Xanadu's Curtis Holbrook will be featured in the ensemble.

Arthur Laurents will direct the revival, which is scheduled to open March, 19, 2009. (The musical will play an out-of-town engagement at the National Theatre in Washington, DC — Dec. 15, 2008-Jan. 17, 2009.)

Sources tell me that one of my very favorite actresses, Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham, will play Adelaide opposite Oliver Platt's Nathan Detroit in the fortcoming Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls. Though I can't vouch for their sources, USA Today is also reporting this news.

Holla!

Graham, of course, was egregiously overlooked by the television academy for her brilliant work on Gilmore Girls. She has also starred in the films Because I Said So, Flash of Genius and Evan Almighty, among others.

She'll be brilliant as the forever-unmarried Adelaide!

My sources tell me that casting for Sky and Sarah is still being finalized.

Julianne Hough Will Need Surgery to Remove Appendix; Edyta Sliwinska Will Partner Cody Linley in Her Absence

Golden child Julianne Hough revealed on tonight's Dancing with the Stars that she has been diagnosed with endometriosis, and she will have surgery to remove her appendix tomorrow.

It's not clear that Julianne intended to reveal this information on tonight's show, and she might not have had the wench known as Samantha Harris hadn't "outed" her. Julianne also revealed that should Cody Linley make it to next week, Edyta Sliwinska will be his partner. Julianne seemed to suggest that she might be back by the following week, but that seem's slightly unrealistic after a major surgery like and appendectomy.

Barack Obama Comments on the Deaths of Jennifer Hudson's Mother and Brother

Even presidential hopeful Barack Obama has been moved by the tragedy that has befallen Jennifer Hudson, as her mother and brother were shot to death earlier this weekend, and her nephew is still missing. Hudson and Obama met earlier this year, when Obama specifically requested she sing the National Anthem at the Democratic National Convention. Obama, like Hudson, lives in Chicago, and had the following to say:

"Michelle and I were absolutely heartbroken to learn about this unimaginable tragedy and we want Jennifer to know that she is in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. We also pray for the swift and safe return of her young nephew."

This is absolutely tragic -- Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson's mother, 57-year-old Darnell Donnerson, and older brother Jason were found dead today in Chicago. The two had been shot. Various reports say that Hudson's nephew is still missing. Jennifer is currently on a plane home to Chicago to be with her family.

EW's Michael Ausiello announced another big Brothers and Sisters casting scoop -- Smallville's Lex Luther, John Glover, will play Saul's new boyfriend.

This marks a reunion of sorts for Ron Rifkin, the actor who plays Saul, and Glover -- the two played former lovers in Jon Robin Baitz' play Paris Letter. Baitz, of course, is a creator of Brothers and Sisters.

Glover has appeared on the Great White Way in The Drowsy Chaperone, Love! Valour! Compassion (for which he received a Tony Award) and much more.

Saul and Glover's character, Andrew, meet at the symphony. Where the romance will lead is anyone's guess. Andrew will be around for at least three episodes.

Julianne Hough Rushed to the Hospital Following DANCING WITH THE STARS

TMZ is reporting that Julianne Hough was rushed to the hospital following tonight's Dancing with the Stars results show. She is said to have been suffering from severe stomach pains. Apparently she was complaining of discomfort all day, but after her encore performance with Cody Linley it became "unbearable."

Julianne is only the latest Dancing competitor to make a trip to the hospital. Misty May Treanor had to drop out of the competition after tearing her ACL, Derek Hough passed out after falling in rehearsal, and Jeffrey Ross scratched his cornea during the first week of competition. Susan Lucci and Toni Braxton have also experienced injuries.

Let's hope Julianne (who I absolutely adore) does not have appendicities, which would likely sideline her from the competition.

Have the DANCING WITH THE STARS Producers Lost Their Way?

I love Dancing with the Stars -- I simply can't get enough of the cheesy joys B (or C or D)-List celebrities ballroom dancing brings to me. I've falled in love with Apolo Anton Ono and Mel B and Helio Castroneves. And after all these years, I have deep affection for Julianne and Derek Hough, Tony Dobolani, and even Cheryl Burke.

But, as we bid adieu to Toni Braxton at the midway point of the season, something is leading me to believe the producers of the show are starting to lose their way. It's not the contestants -- they are as entertaining as ever. The shift that is happening is subtle now, but if it continues heading in this direction, I will start to doubt the potential longevity of the show.

Let me explain...

First of all, this season the show seems to want to think it is So You Think You Can Dance. Don't get me wrong -- So You Think You Can Dance is probably my very favorite reality show. However, Dancing with the Stars is no SYTYCD, and shouldn't try to be. It's got it's own charms. But this year alone we have former finalist Lacey Schwimmer as a professional (not really fair, when you think about it, since she's recently been on a reality show that required people to vote for her -- as famous, say, as Kim Khardashian or Cody Linley. We've also had Anya and Pasha choreograph a routine, and former SYTYCD choreographers Dave Scott and Brian Friedman appearing in a taped segment.

And now comes word that next week the contestants will be asked to do a group old school hip-hop routine. Huh? This is absurd -- the show is about ballroom dancing. What's next -- a contemporary routine choreographed by Mia Michaels? (Though that doesn't really sound that bad...)

Reading this back I can see that I sound like an old codger, but I like my Dancing with the Stars pure -- sue me. A bit of edginess is surely welcome, but embracing hip-hop just seems antithetical to the point of the show (not to mention of having ballroom professionals as dance partners and judges).

Speaking of judges -- Michael Flatley to replace Len Goodman for a week? Um...would America stand for Tommy Mottola sitting in for Simon Cowell? I don't think so! And why have Michael Flatley on a week where they are doing hip-hop? Why not get Jamie King, or if they are really going to dig into the SYTYCD bag, Wade Robson?

Which brings me to my last point -- tonight's "biggest performance ever"!. I mean...my high school did that same production number. Yawn! Cliche! And after all that build-up? Of course, only 5 minutes was dedicated to actual results -- a regular occurrence on these results show. (Don't even get me started for when my Tivo cuts it off before the results have been announced.)

I'm a little angry -- I'll admit it. But take this post as a message to the producers, with love from a fan. Do me right.

Lance Bass's DANCING WITH THE STARS PROBLEM: Lacey Is Sabotaging His Chances!

When it was first announced that So You Think You Can Dance finalist Lacey Schwimmer would be partnering Lance Bass on this season of Dancing with the Stars, I couldn't have been more excited. I loved Lacey on SYTYCD, and I've (embarrassingly) been an 'nsync fan since back in the day, so this partnership seemed like heaven to me.

But -- there's a problem. And the problem is not Lance, who has been charmingly low-key, and displayed considerable talent, since the show began.

No, the problem is Lacey -- namely, that she thinks she is the star.

In some ways I can't blame her -- she's a world-class swing dancing champion, and her final four appearance on SYTYCD gave her plenty of opportunities to hone her "look at me!" skills. That's always been her thing -- SYTYCD fans will remember that when she danced with Kameron, he totally faded into the background, while she hogged the spotlight.

The trouble is that she hasn't been able to switch gears, and highlight her partner instead of herself. All of her choreography seems only minimally focused on showcasing Lance, and primarily focused on showcasing Lacey. That's not the way the show works.

Watch, for example, Julianne Hough and Cheryl Burke, two very talented dancers who simultaneously manage to look great themselves, while also putting their partners front and center. This is a skill that Lacey has yet to acquire.

You might think being scolded by the judges in front of 20 million people might be enough to humble her, but throughout the rest of last night's performance show she aped and mugged (particularly when Cloris Leachman was being interviewed by the unbearable Samantha Harris). Someone has got to get it through to Lacey -- this show is not about her!

If she doesn't get the message, she could find herself booted very soon. And that would be a damn shame.

Showtime Renews DEXTER For Two Additional Seasons!

Showtime announced today that it is renewing it's hit show Dexter for a fourth and fifth season.

Maybe it's time I started watching...

Hall (“Six Feet Under”), it was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, Showtime President of Entertainment. The headline pretty much says it all...I am boldly going on record as saying I think Warren Sapp and Kim Johnson will win Dancing with the Stars.

What, you say? He wasn't even in tonight's Top 3, and Brooke Burke has this competition all wrapped up?

A fair point. To this I'll argue, we're only halfway through -- and Warren's got charm to last another 6 months on this show, if necessary. On top of that, he's consistent -- aside from a slight misstep last week, he's performed strong week after week. And consider this -- the show's last four winners were athletes (Kristi Yamaguchi, Helio Castroneves, Apolo Anton Ono and Emmitt Smith). It's easy to imagine Warren in that company.

As for the Brooke Burke factor, the sheen is bound to wear off of her admittedly beautiful facade. Beyond that, though, pretty girls rarely do well in this competition, even when they are good dancers. Consider Stacey Kiebler (who was coincidentally in the audience tonight), who was probably Season 2's best dancer. She came in 3rd.

See, when it comes down to it, America wants to reward the most likable candidate. Sure, it helps if they can dance, and sometimes it even wins them the competition (a la Yamaguchi). But this season, I'm thinking lovable teddy bear Warren will come out on top.

Luke Grimes Will Play Ryan, the Long Lost Sibling on BROTHERS AND SISTERS

The search is over -- Ryan has been found!

Ending months of speculation, Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reported today that actor Luke Grimes will play the long-lost Walker sibling on ABC's Brothers and Sisters. Friday Night Lights star Scott Porter, The Class star Jason Ritter, and Everwood actor Gregory Smith had also been mentioned for the role.

Grimes' credits include Assasination of a High School President, War Eagle, Arkansas, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and the upcoming Shit Year. Yeah -- he's not exactly a two-time Oscar winner like Sally Field.

Ryan is expected to rear his (not-so-ugly) head in the Walker's life around Thanksgiving time.

John McCain Attempted Suicide in 1968, May Be Covering Up Seriousness of Melanoma, New York Times Reports

A fascinating article in the New York Times brought to light many of the things we know, and don't know, about the health of the four major candidates for public office. Among the things the article discusses are the previous revelation that in 1968, eight months after he was captured by the North Vietnamese, John McCain attempted suicide, trying to hang himself with his shirt. There is also serious debate, and confusion, over how serious McCain's multiple melanomas were, and what that means for his longterm survival.

These questions, of course, are extremely relevant, especially because Sarah Palin is the vice-presidential nominee. And her health? No one knows. Yep, she's a candidate for vice president and she hasn't released one iota of health records. Nice.

Not like Obama is much better -- he, apparently, released a one-page letter from his physician that says he is in "excellent" health. And Biden? He had an aneurysm 20 years ago, and hasn't mentioned how recent tests have gone.

Makes you feel good, doesn't it? And makes Sarah Palin's appearance on SNL a little less funny and a little more scary, eh?

Zac Effron to Star in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4?

The internet is running rampant with rumors that High School Musical star Zac Efron (who I boldly predicted would receive a Golden Globe Award nomination for his role in the film) will star in Pirates of the Caribbean 4 alongside Johnny Depp.

According to "sources" (who these sources are, I have no idea), Efron has been offered $10 million dollars for the role. That's a whole lot of money.

Now, before you dismiss this rumor as similar to the one that he would take over for Daniel Radcliffe on Broadway in Equus (and thus take off his clothes onstage), which he has since denied, this one could have some merit. It is Disney, after all, who produces both HSM and Pirates. They do like to keep things in the family, and Efron has proven to be a valuable investment thus far.

Zac has filmed two movies in addition to the HSM trilogy -- 17 Again opposite Matthew Perry, and Me and Orson Welles with Claire Danes.

Well -- that's coming to an end.

From now on, when I have those craaaaaaazy ideas, I'm going to put them here at Idol Thoughts under the category of BOLD PREDICTION. These will be things that will come true or not, so once my BOLD PREDICTION has been confirmed or been proven ridiculous, I'll be able to return to the post and either tout my brilliance or lacerate myself.

Sounds fun -- right?

As my first BOLD PREDICTION I'm going to say that Zac Efron, that iconic teen heartthrob, will grab a Golden Globe Award nomination for his performance in High School Musical: Senior Year. He's been getting great reviews so far (Variety said he was "most likely to suceed," and the Hollywood Reporter says he has charisma to spare), and, of course, the Golden Globes has the category of "Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy," so the blue-eyed cutie won't have to compete against big guns like Leonardo Dicaprio (Revolutionary Road), Sean Penn (Milk) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt). If he does snag a nod, however, he will likely go up against Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading, leading to a pretty boy battle of the ages.

Does this mean Zac could end up an Academy Award nominee? Um...no. But if my first BOLD PREDICTION comes true, he will walk the red carpet for the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Here's My Question About People Who Quit On Survivor...

Here's my question about people who quit on Survivor to "go home to their family":

Don't these people know that they don't actually get to leave the game and just get on a plane? Even if you don't make it to the jury, eliminated contesants can't simply return home, as that would easily tip-off the fact that they didn't go far in the game. Instead, the first several weeks worth of eliminated contestants usually go on some sort of trip.

This question is relevant, of course, because GC became just the latest Survivor quitter. I can't imagine how horrible it must be out there, but still -- you must have known what you were getting into. Does anyone really try out for a show like this, and suspend their life for 6 weeks to live in the jungle, without doing a bit of research? And to make it 15 days into the game and then quit is just annoying -- either quit in the first few days, or suck it up and make it until you're voted off.

Truth is -- coming into the game you only have about 15% chance of making it to the Final 3 anyways!

Here is the statement:

Palin’s high school grades read: English = B, Math = C, Foreign Language = D (!!), Biological Sciences = B, Physical Sciences = C and Social Studies = C. Yeah -- not so bright.

They are on Dancing with the Stars (Lacey Schwimmer) and on stage in New York (Neil Haskell), but now a So You Think You Can Dance star is hitting the big screen!

Kherington Payne, who made it to the Top 10 of this past season of SYTYCD, has been cast in the remake of Fame. She will play a ballerina named Alice in the film. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the films will also include Kristy Flores, Paul Iacono, Paul McGill (A Chorus Line), Naturi Naughton, Kay Panabaker, Collins Pennie, Walter Perez and Anna Maria Perez.

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles star Thomas Dekker is in talks to play Marco, a singer, and Debbie Allen, who played Lydia in the original Alan Parker film, may have a cameo in the remake. The adult roles have yet to be cast.

Choreographer Kevin Tancharoen will direct the remake of "Fame," which was penned by Allison Burnett and Aline Brosh McKenna. Lakeshore Entertainment's Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg are producing with Mark Canton.

The film will "track the failures and fortunes of super-ambitious young performers and their teachers as they navigate a school year at the prestigious High School for the Performing Arts in New York."

According to the paper, "Some key McCain staffers are content with Palin joking about the "SNL" routines on the campaign trail -- as when she scribbled "I'm not Tina Fey" on a supporter's cell phone and said she'd dressed as Fey on Halloween. But others -- including the governor herself -- think a return punch on the NBC airwaves is what's needed."

Apparently the Palin appearance may parody Fey's American Express commercials. Next weekend's Saturday Night Live will be a rerun, but it is possible Palin could appear Thursday on the first of NBC's ''Weekend Update'' specials in prime time.

Meanwhile, Access Hollywood is reporting that Derek Hough suffered a fall over the weekend and briefly blacked out, requiring him to be rushed to the emergency room. According to a spokesperson for the show, he was released from the hospital and will be fine for tonight's show.

Is DANCING WITH THE STARS' Cheryl Burke Pregnant...Or Just Fat?

I was watching Dancing with the Stars with a friend last night, and he asked me, "Who is that fat girl in the corner?" My answer -- "Two-time champion Cheryl Burke."

Ouch.

Cheryl, who along with fellow pro Edyta basically invented the barely-there Dancing costume, has been conspicuously covered up this season (her dress in last night's rumba had more fabric than five of her dresses last season combined!). Additionally, she has definitely been displaying a little more poundage, both in the body and the face. Here are my theories as to her weight gain:

1. She's pregnant. Seems slighly implausible, as dancing the way she does couldn't possibly be good for a fetus, but hey, anything is possible.

2. Five seasons without a trip to the finals is taking it's toll, and she's fighting with fellow pro Lacey Schwimmer (read post ARE CHERYL BURKE AND JULIANNE HOUGH SNUBBING LACEY SCHWIMMER?). The result? She's "eating her feelings."

Anyone else got a plausible explanation? Sound off below.

Another week of Dancing with the Stars, another elimination prediction.

Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson stole the show for me last night with their totally entertaining Matrix inspired routine -- he is so unbelievably charming, I find it hard to believe he won't cruise into at least the Final Four. (And if he does start to sink he can use Kym's enormous breasts as a flotation device!) Though Len Goodman clearly has something against Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer, I found their performance energetic and exciting, so I'm guessing they won't face any trouble either. Ditto Cloris Leachman, who likely has a couple weeks left in her. Meanwhile Derek Hough and Brooke Burke, as well as Toni Braxton and Alec Mazo, probably earned high enough scores from the judges to keep them out of the danger zone.

Maks and Misty Mae are fan-favorites, as are Julianne Hough and Cody Linley, so they, too, should be spared the wrath of the red light.

That leaves Rocco Dispirito and Karinna Smirnoff, Kim Khardashian and Mark Ballas, Susan Lucci and Tony Dovolani, and Cheryl Burke and Maurice Green , all of whom could get the boot tonight. My money is on Kim and Mark -- the judges clearly hate the vacant reality star, and I have a feeling the viewers share that sentiment. If somehow the big-booty wonder is spared, expect Rocco to be sent packin -- he may make a mean meatball, but his rumba was downright embarrassing!

His day (or night) job is singing and dancing in The Fantasticks Off-Broadway, but Nick Spangler is moonlighting this season with his sister Starr on The Amazing Race. Tonight he showed he can do more than belt out a showtune -- he and sister came in first place!

The two started quickly out of the gate (the startpoint this season was Los Angeles), but missed a key turn on the way to the airport that looked like it was going to find them in trouble. Thanks to the ineptitude of some of their fellow racers they were able to cruise onto the first flight to Santiago, Brazil, and didn't look back from there.

Along the way they've tried to befriend scary former NFL'er and Footballer's Wife wannabe Ken and Trina. He cheated on her and is "trying every day to win her back." Gag me. How long until Nick and Starr regret this "two-round alliance"?

Unfortunately the first eliminated couple on this season's show were adorable hippie beekeepers Anita and Arthur. Let's face it -- they didn't stand a chance.

As for the other competitors, none were immediately memorable -- lots of "dating" couples, and pretty girls who are southern or just-divorced -- you know, the usual. Attention must be paid, however, to Mark and Bill, the "comic book geeks," and the Seth Rogen/Jonah Hill look-a-like frat boys, who one of the contestants called Superbad. Genius.

Episode one -- I'm hooked. Can't wait 'til next week.

When Did SURVIVOR Become the Jeff Probst Show?

There were a lot of people surprised that the first-ever Best Reality Show Host prize at this year's Emmy Awards went to Survivor host Jeff Probst, but anyone who saw last night's season premiere of Survivor Gabon knows the kind of impact he's had on the show.

When the show debuted in 2000, Probst impartially oversaw the proceedings, explained the rules at challenges, and asked a few questions at tribal council. Over the years, his questions have become more and more probing, and he's let slip his feelings about some of the contestants and their behavior on the show.

Flash forward to 2008, and Jeff Probst is helping a tribe elect a leader, and giving them props for coming closer in a competition than they had in the one before ("Much better than the last challenge guys, you were right there.")

I don't believe it's a coincidence that Probst has been inserting himself further into the game -- he is now an executive producer on the show, and is part of the casting process. But is it appropriate for him to insert himself quite that much? He knows more about the game than anyone else -- if he uses his knowledge to help one tribe (ie helping them choose a leader), is it unfair to the other tribe? Or is this just part of the game?

Quotes From Clay Aiken's "I'm Gay" Interview With People Magazine

People magazine has released some quotes from their cover story on Clay Aiken this week. In case you somehow missed it, Clay reveals in the story that he is gay.

Said Aiken: "It was the first decision I made as a father. I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that...[I hope my fans ] know that I've never intended to lie to anybody at all. ... But if they leave, I don't want them to leave hating me."

On coming out to his family: "The born-again Christian singer also reveals how he told his mother Faye he's gay four years ago. After dropping off his younger brother Brett, who was being deployed to Iraq, at Camp Lejeune, 'I started crying in the car,' Aiken remembers. 'It was dark. I was sitting there, thinking to myself. I don't know why I started thinking about it ... I just started bawling. She made me pull over the car and it just came out.' So what was his mom's reaction? 'She started crying. She was obviously somewhat stunned. But she was very supportive and very comforting.' Even now, Aiken admits, 'She still struggles with things quite a bit, but she's come a long way.'"

Said Aiken of his child: "I have no idea if he'll be gay or straight. It's not something I'll have anything to do with, or that he'll have anything to do with. It's already probably up inside the code there ... No matter what the situation you're in, if you're raised in a loving environment, that's the most important thing."

On his dating status: "I've got one man in my life right now and he's crying and he needs formula! And if Jaymes continues to date, she will, but she's not going to date anyone who doesn't understand this is the dynamic."

Dancing with the Stars First Week Impressions: I Love Lance and Lacey!

The first two performance episodes of the new (and eagerly anticipated) season of Dancing with the Stars are now over and we've already lost one "celebrity" (see ya later Jeffrey Ross), which means it's just about time for me to give my impressions on the remaining dozen (one of whom will go home tonight).

Before I do that, however, I have to reiterate a theme that has recurred throughout the years I've been writing about this show..

I hate Samantha Harris!

Ok, I feel better now that I've gotten that out.

On to the contestants:

-Lance Bass and Lacey Schwimmer
Hands down my favorite couple of the season, though at this point it has very little to do with their dancing. I was a huge Lacey fan back on So You Think You Can Dance, where she came in 4th place, and Lance was both in 'nysnc and is the first openly gay contestant on the show. How can I not root for them? I'm a bit concerned for their longevity in the competition, however -- as much as I love Lacey, I'm not sure she's in tune with what the judges are looking for in these dances, and it could come back to bite them in the butt. Still -- for now, they've got my vote.

-Toni Braxton and Alec Mazo
Toni's sporting a crazy-eye thing that is buggin' me out a bit, but so far her moves have been pretty impressive. However -- does she have the stamina to keep up?

-Kim Khardashian and Mark Ballas
Aside from her, um, assets, I'm not quite sure what Kim is bringing to the dance floor -- except a hot partner! Unfortunately for Mark, however, I don't expect this couple to go much further than tonight.

-Cloris Leachman and Corky Ballas
I know, I know, she's charming and hysterical -- but I'm just not enjoying her shake her geriatric groove thing. Call me ageist, but I hope she gets shown the door right quick.

-Misty May Treanor and Maksim Chmerkovsky
Maks compared Misty's legs to Stacey Kiebler, which I think is giving the volleyballer a bit more credit than she currently deserves. Still, there's no way these two won't be around in the Final Four.

-Brooke Burke and Derek Hough
I was sure Brooke would perform like the other models on this show -- ie, stiffly and without personality. What a revelation she's been, executing both dances with style and passion. Keep an eye on these two.

-Cody Linley and Julianne Hough
Julianne can, of course, do no wrong, and Cody is adorable and clearly respectful of the competition. These two may just be a force to be reckoned with.

-Maurice Green and Cheryl Burke
While this couple has been solid thus far, and Cheryl's choreography is always entertaining, they are performing exactly as I would have expected a track and field star to perform. Will the lack of surprise do them in?

-Susan Lucci and Tony Dovolani
Susan -- eat a sandwich! I can't pay attention to your dancing because I'm too afraid you're going to break in half! And maybe lay of the plastic surgery a bit? Your face is lookin' a little rough.

-Ted McGinley and Inna Brayer
Ted is charming, and his dancing is not bad, but thus far he's a bit boring. He's going to have to show a bit more personality, and kiss up a little less, if he wants to go further in the competition.

-Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson
What a surprise this couple has turned out to be! Warren could not be more likable, and he flies around the dance floor in a way that seems completely antithetical to his size. I love 'em! (Though what did Kym do to her breasts??)

There they are -- my first impressions of the Dancing with the Stars Top 12. As I said above, I'm guessing either Kim Khardashian or Ted McGinley will get the boot tonight. Later this week I'll give my (very!) early thoughts on how I think the rest of the season will shake out.

Jerry -- maybe, after last week's show, which was, admittedly, kinda heartbreaking.

But Keesha? Is it 'cause people are having Janelle nostalgia? (Trust me, I understand it -- I was obsessed with Janelle).

Truth is -- I kinda loved Keesha. Of course, like all good Big Brother houseguests, sometimes I loved to hate her and it weirded me out a bit that she reminded me so much of Daniele Donato, but ultimately I kinda loved her. I just loved Dan more.

So, good for Keesha and her $25K. But Renny -- you and I know you wuz robbed!

Dan Gives a Masterful, Jury Performance, Wins Big Brother 10

The winner of Big Brother 10 is...

Dan!

In what can best be described as "masterful," Dan said exactly the right things to win the jury over. The truly remarkable thing, however, is that he was pretty much telling the truth -- his lies weren't lies of vicious deception, they were lies of the game. The first evicted houseguest Brian said it best -- he never made the game personal. He wanted to win, and he did what he needed to. And he did it well. In fact, he did it brilliantly.

That he won 7-0 is kind of surprising, though -- even up until the end I thought April was going Memphis' way. Thing is, though, even though Dan was a formidable foe, Memphis really had nothing to say. He got as far as he did by staying out of the way and not making himself stand out as a physical threat. It's a skill, to be sure, but not one that can go up against the skiiiiiiiiillz that Dan displayed.

Kudos Dan, on a game well played.

It's all come down to this -- Memphis and Dan will battle it out in front of the jury tomorrow night in an effort to win the $500K grand prize on Big Brother 10.

Here's how I see the votes panning out:

Jerry -- Memphis
Keesha -- Dan
Renny -- Dan
Ollie -- Memphis
Michelle -- Dan
April -- Memphis

A couple of these are no-brainers -- Jerry will definitely go Memphis' way, as will April and Ollie, who have not gotten over their "betrayal" by Dan, while Keesha and Rennie are more than likely to choose Dan as the game's best player. I'm also guessing Michelle will have been won over by Dan's taking her on the trip to the private island, and the buttering up he is sure to do on tomorrow's finale.

Which leaves Libra. Oh Libra. While she lost her cool several times throughout the game, I'm guessing her final decision will actually be a rational one, and she'll choose the player who made more strategic moves over the one who glided under the radar.

Which means -- Libra will vote for Dan, and Dan will win Big Brother 10.

The 2007-2008 Creative Arts Emmy Awards were announced tonight, and So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Wade Robson picked up his second straight win in the category of Best Choreography for his work on "The Hummingbird and Flower/Chairman's Waltz." Wade beat out fellow SYTYCD choreographers Mandy Moore and Shane Sparks.

In other Emmy news, Kathy Griffin's My Life on the D-List (loveLovelove!) won it's second straight prize as well. I haven't yet heard if Kathy's speech is as scandalous as last year's infamous "Suck it Jesus" moment.

Cynthia Nixon, Kathryn Joosten, Tim Conway and Glynn Turman took home the Guest Actor and Actress prizes for Law and Order: SVU, Desperate Housewives, 30 Rock and In Treatment, respectively, while Sarah Silverman (and others) picked up the Emmy for their lyrics to "I'm Fucking Matt Damon" (genius).

All in all, John Adams took home 8 awards, followed by Mad Men with four. Dancing with the Stars grabbed two, while American Idol snagged one. In my mind the big one (reality show host) is going to come down to Tom Bergeron and Ryan Seacrest. My vote would go to Seacrest -- you?

The "Renegades" will now battle it out in Part 3 of the competition, though it appears as though Memphis is going to "let" Dan win. That way, Dan will have the responsibility of having eliminated Jerry, evening the playing field since Memphis sent Keesha packin'.

(Though, it should be noted that Memphis' "betrayal" of Keesha will likely have bigger repercussions, especially since Keesha and Renny are so close.)

Part 1 of the final Big Brother 10 HOH competiton is over, and the winner is...

DAN!!

Dan outlasted Memphis and Jerry in the balancing plain part of the competition. The winner of Part 2, either Memphis or Jerry, will face off against Dan in the third and final part of the competition.

Dan and Memphis are continuing to lay low, though I'm not quite sure why -- if Jerry wins HOH, it won't matter that he knows Dan and Memphis intend to go to the Final 2 with each other. Perhaps they are just keeping themselves busy?

Drama in the reality TV dance world!

According to an item in today's New York Post Page Six, two-time Dancing with the Stars champions Cheryl Burke and Julianne Hough are snubbing former So You Think You Can Dance finalist and new Dancing with the Stars professional Lacey Schwimmer. Apparently the ladies are upset that Lacey was paired with Lance Bass, who is considered to be the most talented and highest profile star on the upcoming season.

While it's not hard to imagine Cheryl (who is paired with football star Maurice Greene) pulling a diva act, Julianne seems like a sweetheart, and she's got a burgeoning music career -- is she really that upset? Plus, she's got a young buck of her own -- Disney channel hearthrob Cody Linley.

I can't wait until this show premieres!
