Which Former Idol Had the Best 2007?

Now that 2007 is coming to a close, I thought it might be interesting to try and figure out which former American Idol contestant had the best year -- was it Carrie, with all her awards success? Chris, with his huge-selling album? Fantasia, who took Broadway by storm?
I think we can all agree that the best year was had by Jennifer Hudson -- an Golden Globe, Oscar, and SAG award; a role in the Sex and the City movie; a role opposite fellow Oscar winner Forrest Whitaker in Winged Creatures; IT girl status; an album on the way; and now the news that she will star opposite Queen Latifah in The Secret Life of Bees. Yeah, pretty hard to top that.
But who comes next?
Of course I want to know what you think as well, so please take the poll below!
Here are my picks:
1. Carrie Underwood
This is the year Carrie Underwood went from successful Idol alum to complete and total superstar. Her music crossed over from country to pop; she picked up every award imaginable; she dated high profile, very goodlooking guys; and she released a second CD without skipping a beat. There was no topping Ms. U. this year.
2. Chris Daughtry
His album is, as of now, the biggest seller of 2007 (despite the fact that it was released in '06), and he recently picked up 3 American Music Awards and 4 Grammy nominations. Yeah, he's rockin' it.
3. Fantasia
'Tasia didn't just appear on Broadway this year -- she took it by storm. Totally rejuvenating The Color Purple, she also released her sophomore CD, had a couple of hit singles on the R&B charts, and picked up 3 Grammy nods in the process. Not too shabby.
4. Kelly Clarkson
Sure, My December didn't have nearly the success of it's predecessor Breakaway, but it was just certified platinum and spawned a Top 25 single in "Never Again." She also released a duet with Reba McEntire of "Because of You" that went to the top of the country chart and earned her a Grammy nomination, and embarked on a sold-out tour this fall. All in all, not quite the disaster of a year some pundits would have you believe.
5. Kellie Pickler
Surprising just about everyone, Kellie released a CD that people actually wanted to listen to, and she's produced three chart-ing country songs, in addition to touring. Throw in a couple of award nominations, and all of a sudden this dumb blonde seems pretty smart.
6. Elliott Yamin
At this time last year it wasn't clear Elliott would even release a CD, but now that he has, he's become the second most successful alum from '05. The album has gone Gold, and debut single "Wait for You" was a Top 5 smash.
Outside the Top 6:
Katharine McPhee (disappointing CD sales, but will make movie debut early next year)
Clay Aiken (where are ya, Clay?)
Tamyra Gray (getting good reviews for her work in the Broadway musical Rent)
Taylor Hicks (very disappointing CD sales)
Bo Bice (released a sophomore CD to very little fanfare)

Year End: Ten Best Reality Shows of 2007

All this week I'll be listing my favorites in the different areas of pop culture that Idol Thoughts covers. Now up: reality shows!
As much as I love American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance was, to me, the most entertaining reality show for the second straight year. Dancing with the Stars grabbed two of the Top 5 spots, while Survivor also secured two positions on the list. Only one Top Model cycle made the cut, however, while Amazing Race missed a spot on the list completely.
Please let me know what your favorite reality show of the year was by taking the poll here.
Also let me know which reality show you are most looking forward to in 2008 by taking the poll here.
1. So You Think You Can Dance (Winner: Sabra Johnson)
2. American Idol (Winner: Jordin Sparks)
3. Dancing with the Stars (Winner: Apolo Anton Ono)
4. Big Brother (Winner: Dick Donato)
5. Dancing with the Stars (Winner: Helio Castroneves)
6. Project Runway (Winner: Jeffrey)
7. Survivor: China (Winner: Todd Herzog)
8. Top Chef (Winner: Hung)
9. Survivor: Fiji (Winner: Earl Cole)
10. America's Next Top Model (Winner: Saleisha)

Year End: Ten Best Non-Reality TV Shows of 2007

I would've imagined I'd have tons of options when considering my ten favorite non-reality shows of the year, but when I sat down to make this list, the well was surprisingly dry. Even some of the shows I included (Weeds, Grey's Anatomy) didn't have perfect seasons, but when looked at in the bigger picture, they still made the cut.
Here's my list...
1. Friday Night Lights
2. Brothers & Sisters
3. Mad Men
4. Damages
5. Lost
6. Weeds
7. Desperate Housewives
8. House
9. The Office
10. Grey's Anatomy
What was your favorite TV show in 2007? Leave a comment and let me know!

Jennifer Hudson To Star In The Secret Life of Bees

Jennifer Hudson is not playin' around with her film career.
After the novice actress won the Oscar for Dreamgirls, I wasn't quite sure what her next move would be, or if she would be able to really sustain a movie career. Well, someone is advising her well, because she's just signed on to star in The Secret Life of Bees alongside Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning and possibly Alicia Keys. Adapted from the acclaimed novel, the movie is sure to be a hit.
This, of course, is on top of her supporting role in the Sex and the City movie, and a small part in the film Winged Creatures as Forrest Whittaker's daughter. Nice choices J-Hud!
My only question is...when is your album coming out??

Rumor Mill: Is Fantasia Pregnant?

In the last day we've gotten confirmation that 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears is with child, and that Lily Allen is knocked up, and now, if internet rumors are to be believed, American Idol champ and current Color Purple star Fantasia is also pregnant. The baby-daddy is apparently rapper Young Dro.
MediaTakeout.com is reporting that, according to a Color Purple insider, Fantasia has been talking openly to the cast about her new condition. The insider explained, "She told [one of the cast members] that she's pregnant and she's really excited"
The insider also claims that while Fantasia isn't showing yet, she's definitely acting pregnant, saying, "She's walks with her hand on her hip and all of a sudden she's taken to chewing ice."
Looks like they'll have to release 'Tasia's song "Baby Mama." B-A-B-Y!
UPDATE: Fantasia's rep says that she is not pregnant, although some Broadway sources are still not convinced. Thanks to the commenter below for the update.

Britney Spears' 16 Year Old Sister Jamie Lynn is Pregnant!
Oh. My. God.
I told myself I was over Britney Spears and the whole family, but this sucked me right back in.
Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year-old sister of beleagured (former) pop star Britney Spears, is pregnant with her 19-year-old boyfriend Casey Aldridge's child.
Wow.
In an interview with OK Magazine, she said, “It was a shock for both of us, so unexpected. I was in complete and total shock and so was he.”
Um, yeah. You're 16. I would think so.
Wonder what her employer Nickelodeon will have to say about this...

Underwood, Daughtry and Sparks' Album Sales Increase, as Lewis' Plummet
There was good news for three former Idols on this week's album chart, and not-so-good news for one.
Both Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks saw sales increases this week -- Carrie jumped by 32% to sell 138K for the #9 spot, while Jordin's sales increased 16% to 60K, good enough for the #26 spot. Daughtry saw the week's biggest gain, improving 40% to 60K, which put him at #27.
Blake Lewis, meanwhile, who debuted last week in the Top 10, plummeted 44% to just 54K. That leaves him at #33 for the week.
Josh Groban, yet again, grabbed the chart's top spot, selling a whopping 666K copies of Noel. Alicia Keys (299K), The Eagles (239K), Mannheim Steamroller (193K) and NOW 26 (192K) round out the Top 5.

SPOILER: All-Stars For Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites Revealed!
SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER!
Always take spoiler info with a grain of salt, but the internet is buzzing with rumors of the ten returning all-stars for Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites this February. Here's who I'm hearing it will be:
SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER!
James (Survivor: China)
Amanda (Survivor: China)
Yau-Man (Survivor: Fiji)
Jonathan (Survivor: Cook Islands)
Ozzy (Survivor: Cook Islands)
Parvati (Survivor: Cook Islands)
Cerie (Survivor: Panama)
Ami (Survivor: Vanuatu)
Eliza (Survivor: Vanuatu)
and...believe it or not...
Jonny Fairplay (Survivor: Pearl Islands)
Fairplay? Really? Ugh.
As for the rest of the list, there were a few names I had to wrack my head to remember (Eliza?), but all in all, they are not bad choices. They clearly decided not to go with previous winners, and they've only brought back all-stars who have been on the show since the last all-star edition.
What do you think? Do you believe these? Is there someone's name you wish was here but isn't?

rssHugger: A Review

I have asked for inclusion in a new site called rssHugger, which helps bring visitors to your blogs and surfers find blogs on subjects that they are interested in. If this works out, it could benefit both you (the reader) and me (the blogger)!
rssHugger says they use the power of the environmentally friendly Internet and viral marketing to bring blog authors and blog readers together, which sounds like an exciting idea. I'm always looking for new feedburning opportunities, so keep your fingers crossed this works out!

The men of Gossip Girl hit up TRL yesterday, and JustJared has the pic to prove it!

Reality Debut Tonight: NBC's Clash of the Choirs

The timing couldn't be worse for me to watch a new reality show -- I've got last-minute shopping to do, friends in town, and holiday parties to attend. Then why can't I stop thinking NBC's Clash of the Choirs?
Debuting tonight, the four-night series will feature Blake Shelton, Patti Labelle, Nick Lachey, Kelly Rowland and Michael Bolton auditioning, recruiting and rehearsing full choirs in their hometowns. Some will sing traditional choral music, while others will sing rock, rap or pop.
Could the concept be any cheesier?
I don't care -- my Tivo is set, and in between sips of egg-nog I'll be tuning in. Will you?
Here's the preview:

Which Favorites Will Return for Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites?

Now that we know the next installment of Survivor will be called Fans vs. Favorites, the question becomes...which favorites will return?
Jeff Probst announced last night that at least one contestant from Survivor: China will be returning, and I'd be shocked (shocked!) if he was not referring to James. The big guy was loved by nearly everyone who watched the show, and due to his Immunity Idol blunder he was prematurely voted off, so it's seems a bit of a no-brainer that he will return.
Who else will be back? Will it be limited to contestants since the last All Star version of the show, or is any contestant fair game?
Here's a few of the folks on my wish-list...who's on yours?
Yau-Man Chan
Earl Cole
Dreamz
Cirie Fields
Yul Kwon
Stephenie LaGrossa
Oscar "Ozzy" Lusth
Rob Mariano
Kathy Varick O'Brien
Tom Westman
Ethan Zohn

Survivor's Todd Gives a Masterful Jury Performance

Perhaps Survivor's Todd should think about leaving his flight attendant days behind and become an attorney, because he rocked the final tribal council in last night's finale. Wow.
Coming into the Final 4, it seemed like Amanda was a shoo-in for victory -- she had played the game well and hadn't ruffled nearly as many feathers as Todd, so I was sure she'd get a Danni or Vecepia-like win. Winning the final two challenges should have secured her the easy $1 million dollar. But, following the tribal council in which Denise was voted out, something happened to Amanda -- she became apologetic, overly-earnest, and weak.
And then Todd stepped in for the kill.
There have been some good arguments made over the years on Survivor, but I'm not sure anyone has every handled the jury's questions with such mastery. His answer to John Robert was pure genius -- he knew what John and his big ego needed to hear, and he gave it to him in such a beautifully articulated response that the big man was actually rendered speechless. Amazing.
I'll also give some credit to Courtney, who presented her "can you believe I'm still her, and I've been totally myself the whole time" argument with such aplomb that I had a moment where I though she might actually win! The fact that she squeezed past Amanda for 2nd place is very impressive.
As for the rest of the episode, there was plenty of drama to go around, with both the final reward and immunity challenges pushing the contestants to their limits. And props to Probst -- year-in, year-out, he manages to ask the questions and make the statements that make the contestants squirm, and I love him for it.
Do you think Todd should have won Survivor: China, or should Amanda, Denise or Courtney been named the winner? Take the Idol Thoughts poll here and let me know! (Results will be revealed tomorrow morning).

Celebrity Crush: Weeds' Justin Kirk

He can do drama...he can do comedy...and he looks mighty fine doing both. Yep, I love Justin Kirk!
Most people know him for his hysterical work on the Showtime comedy Weeds, where he is pitch-perfect as stoner Uncle Andy. But don't forget, he picked up an Emmy nomination for his heartbreaking performance in the HBO mini-series Angels in America, playing AIDS-stricken Prior Walters. He also charmed on the late TV show Jack & Jill, and the film Flannel Pajamas.
Enjoy the pics of the delectable Mr. Kirk!

Survivor just announced that this February, super-fans of the show will go head-to-head with all-stars from the show's past, in an incarnation called Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites. I'm freaking out!
This is so much better than an all all-star version, as the former castaways will have to band together to fight off the superfans. It's gonna be awesome.

Youtube Video: Kelly Clarkson Kissed By Overzealous Fan at Concert
I can understand the impulse, but I've always managed to restrain myself from jumping on stage to kiss Kelly Clarkson while she is performing. Not so much a fan in Belgium, who did just that this weekend. Watch the video...
Luckily the situation was taken care of pretty quickly. People, I know Kelly is amazing, but control yourselves!

Who Should and Will Win Survivor: China?

It all comes down to this: Courtney, Denise, Todd and Amanda will duke it out on tomorrow night's finale of Survivor: China? Who will be named the Sole Survivor?
Todd and Amanda have dominated the game strategically. They were responsible for the handling of the immunity idols, the elimination of John Robert, and the blindsiding of James. If there's any Survivor justice in the world, they should be standing in the final 2.
Notice I say "final 2." Despite the fact that the last two seasons have seen a final 3 go in front of the jury, I'm guessing this season will revert to a duo, as opposed to a trio, going to the finals. I have no proof (except scheduling) to back that up -- it's just a hunch.
As for Denise and Courtney, while both should be commended for making it this far in the game, neither, in my opinion, is worthy of the million dollars. Courtney's strategy may have been to be a whiny bitch with no discernable skill set, and, to her credit, it worked, but that doesn't mean she should get the money. Similarly, Denise laid low and didn't ruffle feathers, and she seems like a truly lovely, salt-of-the-earth human being, but aside from winning two reward challenges (one thanks to Courtney) she made absolutely zero impact on the game. In fact, she had the chance to turn the tides by voting off Todd, and didn't take it, so I just can't see the jury naming her the champ.
Which leaves Todd and Amanda. While I admire the fact that Todd was devious pretty much from the get-go, didn't hide it, and still managed to avoid elimination, I'm more impressed with Amanda's quiet, subtle gameplaying methods. She, too, lied and deceived, but did it in a much more gentle way, as to avoid upsetting too many of her tribemates. She did it well, it worked, and I think it qualifies her for the victory.
And, if she does make it to the final 2, I think the jury will agree, awarding her the win over either Todd, Denise or Courtney. If it's Todd versus Denise or Courtney, it may be hard for the jury to avoid the temptation to give Denise the money, but I think Todd will still pull out a win.
If, somehow, Courtney and Denise are the final pair (not a totally ridiculous notion, considering how well Courtney performed in the last endurance immunity challenge), I believe the jury won't be able to overlook Courtney's bad attitude, and will make Denise $1 million richer.
But, for the record, my prediction of who will and should win Survivor: China is Amanda.
Who do you think should and will win? Leave a comment and let me know.

Dancing with the Stars' Maks Broods for the Camera
He made no effort to hide his vanity, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Dancing with the Stars' Maksim Chmerkovskiy seems to love the camera so much.
Maks, of course, announced last week that he was speaking from a place of passion when he said he wouldn't return to the hit ABC show. He will, indeed, be back this spring.
What do you think -- Maks, hot or not?

Jordin Sparks Will Sing National Anthem at the Super Bowl

Considering the game is on Fox, it's not a huge surprise that an American Idol champ will perform, but it's still big news that Jordin Sparks will sing the National Anthem at this year's Super Bowl. According to the Arizona Republic, the teenager will perform before the big game, which is being held this year on February 3.
Hopefully this will boost her album sales!

While Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis haven't seen much traction with their newly released albums, former Idol contestants Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood are doing just fine, thank you very much. You Wanna Be On Top? Ranking the Winners of America's Next Top Model

Now that we've come to end of another cycle of America's Next Top Model, I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at all of the show's winners to determine, after all, who has come out on top.
Of course, any best-of list is subjective, so please feel free to disagree with me and let me know which winners you loved and hated. I'm basing my rankings for this list on how each girl performed on the show (photo shoots, runway, attitude, personality, growth), not on what they have done since winning.
Here goes...
1. Danielle Evans (Season 6)
She's gorgeous, her photos were fierce, her runway walk was awesome -- the only this girl couldn't do is talk! What sealed the deal for me in giving Dani the top spot, however, is overcoming a sickness that required a hospital visit to triumph in a jungle-themed photo shoot. Now that is a Top Model!
2. Eva Pigford (Season 3)
Eva's pictures were always fantastic, but the real appeal of watching her on Top Model was seeing her overcome her personal demons to become the true model we (and the judges) knew she was capable of being. Love her.
3. Adrianne Curry (Season 1)
Adrianne's personality was so endearing to me that I put her at #9 on my list of Ten Favorite Reality Show Contestants! Foul mouthed, hysterical, and game for anything, she helped make Top Model into the must-see hit that it is today.
4. Saleisha Stowers (Season 9)
The most recent winner is poised, professional, and takes great photos (though, arguably not as good as her competitor Jenah). Cover Girl must be happy to have her.
5. CariDee English (Season 7)
Goofy and a spitfire, CariDee injected tons of personality into Season 7's competition. Melrose may have had stronger chops as a model, but there was no denying CariDee's charm and appeal.
6. Nicole Linkletter (Season 5)
Probably the least endearing winner the show has ever had, Nicole's porcelain skin and ridiculously beautiful face helped her coast to victory. I think she probably grew the least of any winner, but when you come into the competition looking like she did, who cares?
7. Naima Mora (Season 4)
I wanted to love Naima, but I never found her as edgy as she seemed to find herself. In fact, I found her quite boring! Still, she was the most deserving contestant on what I consider to be Top Model's weakest season.
8. Yoanna House (Season 2)
The only girl without a perfect body to win the show, Yoanna should have been the underdog I rooted for. Instead, I found her whiny and kind of annoying.
9. Jaslene Gonzalez (Season 8)
I mean!!
So, does my list match up with yours? Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

The Snake is Spared As Peih-Gee Eliminated on Survivor

Props to Survivor 's Peih=Gee -- she was a good competitor. But she had to go.
As I said in my post this morning (Who Will Come in Fifth Place on Survivor?), if Amanda knew what was best for her, she'd stick with Todd. For now. Peih-Gee would have won a jury vote -- she played hard, she was the underdog, and her former tribemates make up the majority of the jury. And giving Todd the chance to sway the jury was a risk Amanda just couldn't take.
But now that Peih-Gee is gone, anything is fair game. Neither Denise or Courtney will be able to make much of a case for themselves, which means Todd and Amanda are now each other's biggest threat. Both played strategically -- Amanda more subtly than Todd, but she stabbed some back as well. If either has the chance to eliminate the other in the Final Four, they should take it.
The rest of the show was pretty run-of-the-mill: Denise couldn't eat the gross food item; Courtney once again proved she has absolutely no skills whatsoever; and Todd and Amanda both continued to actively, and wisely, strategize. Still, I can't wait for Sunday's finale.

Ten Favorite Reality Show Contestants: SYTYCD's Travis Wall at #7
I am in the process of listing my Ten Favorite Reality Show Contestants of All Time. Some of these folks I fell in love with for the talent; others simply had personalities that won me over. Any way you look at them, though, these are my faves from shows such as American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Amazing Race, Survivor, and many more.
Please note: I did not include any person who was a "celebrity" before they appeared on a reality show, so all contestants from Dancing with the Stars and other shows like it were ineligible for this list.
#8 - Travis Wall, So You Think You Can Dance
Here's an embarrassing Idol Thoughts secret for ya -- I have never screamed as loudly as I did for Travis Wall at the So You Think You Can Dance concert in 2006.
What is it about the dancing wonder that inspired so much passion that my vocal chords were hurting for days? Aw, let me count the ways:
(A) He's adorable. I mean, look at that picture!
(B) His dancing is transcendant. Along with Nick Lazarrini, Danny Tidwell and Sabra Johnson, he is one of the best and most versatile dancers the show has ever seen. The contemporary "park bench" dance, choreographed by Mia Michaels, that he did with Heidi? Sheer genius. And those spins? Next to his step-brother Danny, no one has spun with the power and authority that Travis did.
(C) His charming personality. Try, just try, not to fall a little bit in love with him when smiles. I dare ya.
Yeah, I love Travis. Don't you?

Project Runway Gets Serious, As Stephen is Eliminated

It was a "Very Special" episode of Project Runway this week that saw the departure of a fan favorite, the return of another fan favorite, and the elimination of a hysterically snarky, yet pretty god awful, designer. It doesn't get much better than this!
I was convinced that the "Jack drama" that had been promised in the promos for this week's episode were a red herring, but I was unfortunately proved wrong, as a medical condition forced him to leave the competition. It's a real shame -- Jack had the chance to prove that being infected with HIV was not going to hold him back, and he had done good work so far in the competition. We'll miss you, Jack.
And then Chris returned! While the logic given was "the interest of fair competition," is it really fair to bring back someone who had produced a garment ugly enough to get them eliminated? Don't get me wrong -- I love Chris, and I'm glad to see him back. I just wonder how Stephen feels, now that he's watching from the sidelines and Chris is still in the competition.
Speaking of Stephen -- what were you thinking? If he was going to completely disregard the fabric he had to work with (that hideous wedding dress), the least he could have done was make sure he produced a flat-out gorgeous outfit (a la Jillian). His creation was an abomination -- ill-fitting, in bad taste, and just plain ugly. Nina was spot-on calling it a French Maid's outfit. After two clunkers in the last two weeks, I'm not sorry to see Stephen go.
Elisa and Ricky, meanwhile, continue to hang in by a very loose thread. Ricky's outfit was, for the first time, not terrible this week -- but he still cried! Get this weepy beeyatch outta here!
I would be remiss if I didn't mention Christian, who is quickly becoming my favorite contestant, as much for his witty one-liners as for his designs. But his work this week was fierce -- almost as fierce as his statement "Don't these bitches know I'm better than them all?" Gotta love self-confidence like that!
What do you think? Was the right contestant eliminated? And who is in more danger next week -- Ricky or Elisa?

The Golden Globes Actually Got it Kinda Right!

Every year when the nominations are announced for the various award ceremonies, I get excited, and then disappointed. Year in, year out, it seems my faves are passed over in favor of shows that I couldn't care less about.
But...this year the Golden Globes actually got it kinda right!
I had said in a post last week that I was hoping for nods for Damages and Mad Men, and whaddaya know -- Damages grabbed nominations for Best Drama, Best Actress (Glenn Close), Best Supporting Actress (Rose Byrne) and Best Supporting Actor (Ted Danson). Yay! Similarly, Mad Men picked up nominations for Best Drama and Best Actor (Jon Hamm). Double yay!
Of course, Friday Night Lights was egregiously left off the list. No yay for that. Also no yay for the exclusions of Keri Russell (Waitress), Into the Wild or it's star Emile Hirsch.
I was glad to see Emmy winner Sally Field get a nomination for Brothers & Sisters, however; ditto for her B&S co-star Rachel Griffith. While I'm not a huge Pushing Daisies fan, it was nice to see that show and it's stars, Lee Pace and Anna Friel, get recognized. And I'm thrilled Christina Applegate was nominated for Samantha Who? Could she be any cuter on that show?
As for the movie nominations, there were no huge surprises, but I was happy to see Nikki Blonsky get nominated for Hairspray (I thought she was fantastic in the film). The Globes always go with the big stars, and this year is no exception -- Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Jodie Foster, George Clooney, John Travolta and Denzel Washington were all recognized.
Should be a starry night!

Four Women and a Gay Mormon: Which Survivor Contestant Will Have to Settle For Fifth Place?

Isn't the last Survivor week of each season so fun?? We get an episode on Thursday, and then a three-hour finale extravaganza just three days later. Good times!
Before we get to tonight's episode, however, it's time to predict which Survivor contestant is going to have to settle for fifth place. Remember, there's four women and a Gay mormon left: Todd, Amanda, Peih-Gee, Denise and Courtney. Who will be the next to go?
If we are to believe the commercials for tonight's episode, Todd and Amanda, alliances throughout the competition, have decided to turn on each other. If this is, in fact, the case, and Amanda decides to team up with Denise and Peih-Gee, it would seem Todd would be the next one eliminated, and the four women would go to the finals. This scenario is possible -- Amanda and Todd are definitively the strongest players, and it is possible that both would want to eliminated their toughest competition before getting to the final 2. But I just don't see it happening.
It's time for Peih-Gee to go. I always root for the underdog, and Peih-Gee has been the underdog for several weeks now, but because most of her former tribemates are now on the jury, Todd and Amanda have to know that she poses a huge threat to them in the finals. This is not the case for Denise or Courtney -- both have been getting through by not ruffling feathers, and neither has a real shot at taking home the $1 million prize. If they know what is good for them, Todd and Amanda will realize that for now they are stronger together than they are apart, and they'll send Peih-Gee packing.
Here's hoping.
Who do you think will be eliminated on tonight's Survivor?

Girl You Better Work! Saleisha Wins America's Next Top Model

It all seems so obvious now, doesn't it? Saleisha walked into America's Next Top Model as arguably the competition's most naturally beautiful contestants, and she walked out of it the winner. Yes, Heather was a more compelling "character" and Jenah took better photos, but Saleisha had the whole package, and I can't say I'm sorry to see her win.
The episode was magnificently watchable, from the predictable commercial flubs to the catastrophe on the catwalk. I wasn't at all surprised to see Jenah go, despite taking what Tyra called "some of the best pictures [she'd] ever seen." It always makes me a little uncomfortable to watch Tyra perform psychotherapy on these poor girls, and then eliminate them five minutes later. But hey, that's reality TV kids -- you get what you signed up for.
I've gotta give it up to Chantal for putting up a good fight throughout the competition. Like Tyra, I had originally written her off as a dumb beach blonde, but her very obvious passion for modeling shone through, and she did take some pretty fierce pictures. It is a shame, though, that her final runway experience was marred by the great-stilts-incident-of-'07.
Ah well, it wasn't like she was gonna win yesterday. Saleisha had this one in the bag (I even called it in my post Battle to the Finish: Who Will Win Top Model?), but she proved she's worthy of the title with a professional-esque runway performance. Work it out, girl!
PS. Ms. J, Twiggy, Nigel and the one-and-only Tyra walking down the catwalk? Classic.
PPS. Jaslene? No comment.

Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford Takes it Off

I've resisted jumping on the Chace Crawford bandwagon, preferring to save my lust for his Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgley. But in the past few weeks, as pictures of the young actor have circulated around the web (often in relation to his rumored paramour Carrie Underwood), I haven't been able to help falling for him a bit.
And then I saw these pictures. Wow. Wow, wow, wow.
Yeah, I'm officially in love.

Sneek Peek: Kristen Bell in Princess Leia's Gold Bikini

I've loved Kristen Bell ever since she appeared on Broadway in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I also caught her Off-Broadway in Reefer Madness, and of course I was a huge fan of Veronica Mars. But I've never seen her like this!
Thanks to egotastic.com, here is a photo of Kristen from the upcoming movie Fanboys, in which she plays the female member of a group that is trying to steal an early copy of Episode I: The Phantom Menace for their dying friend. Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and Dan Fogler also appear in the film.
Doesn't Kristen look great??

Golden Globe Noms Announced Tomorrow -- Here's Who I'm Hoping Scores

The Golden Globe Award nominations will be announced tomorrow morning, and while I'm bracing for myself for the usual list of suspects, there's a few stars and series I'm hoping will make the cut.
Like, for example, Friday Night Lights. After feeling no Emmy love this year, I'm desperately hoping it will score nods for Best Series, Best Actor (Kyle Chandler), Best Actress (Connie Britton) and maybe even a few of the Supporting players (Zach Gilford, Scott Porter, Adrianne Palicki). I realize these nominations are unlikely, but, hey, I can hope, right?
More likely to make the list is Damages, or at least it's star, Glenn Close. I'd also imagine Ted Danson has a good shot at picking up a nomination.
I'd love to see Christina Applegate get recognized for her charming work on Samantha Who?; ditto Rachel Griffiths or Calista Flockhart for Brothers & Sisters (Emmy Award winner Sally Field seems like a shoo-in). Mad Men is also very deserving of a nod for Best Series, Best Actor (Jon Hamm as Don Draper) and Best Supporting Actress (Christina Hendricks as Joan) -- will it make the cut?
What under-the-radar stars or series would you like to see recognized by the Golden Globes?

Colin Farrel Hits the Field -- And Looks Hot Doing It!

Colin Farrell in a locker room -- now that is an image I can respond to!
Here are some photos from the upcoming film Pride and Glory (also starring Edward Norton). According to IMDB, the film tells the story of corruption scandal that involves a multi-generational family of New York City police officers.
But really, who cares what it's about if Colin looks like this??

More Charity: 'Idol Gives Back' Will Be Back
The charity continues! The producers of American Idol have announced that last year's "Idol Gives Back" special will return this year on April 9, 2008. As it was last year, that should just about coincide with the Top 6 finalists.
Last year's event was co-hosted by Ellen Degeneres and featured Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Josh Groban and many more.
It's hard to knock an event that earned over $75 million for good causes, so I'm just gonna let this news sit. Gooooooooo charity!

American Idol's Blake Lewis Sells Less Than 100K for #9 Debut on Album Chart

Well this should make Jordin Sparks feel a little better.
American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis sold 98K copies of his new CD, debuting at #9 on this week's album chart. Click here to see how that holds up against the debuts of other Idol second place finishers.
Carrie Underwood moved 105K copies of her CD Carnival Ride, which placed her at #7. That was an increase of 15% over the previous week.
Sparks sold 52K discs, putting her at #24, while Daughtry, whose CD was released over a year ago, sold 43K CD's for the #33 spot.
The top spot on the album chart was, once again, held by Josh Groban, who moved a very impressive 569K copies of his Christmas CD. Wow, wow, wow.
The rest of the Top 5 was populated by Alicia Keys (234K), The Eagles (203K), Now 26 (159K) and Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus (136K).

Ten Favorite Reality Show Contestants: American Idol's Elliott Yamin at #8
I am in the process of listing my Ten Favorite Reality Show Contestants of All Time.
#8 - Elliott Yamin, American Idol
While he may not have taken home the title of American Idol (he came in third place on the fifth season of the singing competition), Elliott Yamin did win my heart.
Whether it was his goofy ears, his not-so-perfect teeth, his charming aw-shucks personality, or his tremendous singing voice, Elliott won me over, hook-line-and-sinker, from day one. He wasn't the most natural performer, but he always had a smile on his face and sang from the heart, winning over millions of fans in the process. A lot of credit for his success has been given to his back story (deaf in one ear, juvenile diabetes, the song of a single mother), but that takes away from the power of his singing -- "A Song For You," "Home," "Moody's Mood for Love," "Somebody to Love," and "Teach Me Tonight" were, after all, some of the highlights of the season. Elliott has continued to prove he's got real musical chops, seeing his debut album go Gold and spawn a Top 10 single.
Keep on movin' on, Elliott. I can't wait to see what you'll do next.

Howard, Rose, Rashad and Jones to Star in Broadway's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

If you're gonna do a much-revived classic, you might as well get a stellar cast. That's exactly what director Debbie Allen has done for the all-African American version of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, which will be revived on Broadway next year.
Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard will join Tony Award winners Anika Noni Rose, Phylicia Rashad and James Earl Jones in the Tennessee Williams play. The show will open March 6, 2008 at the Broadhurst Theater.
Howard (Hustle and Flow) will play Brick in the production, with Rose (Dreamgirls, Caroline or Change) taking on the role of Maggie, which, of course, was made famous in the film version by Elizabeth Taylor. Rashad (who is currently appearing in Cymbeline at Lincoln Center Theater) and Jones (Fences)will play Big Mama and Big Daddy.
Tickets for the production go on sale December 29.

Which Designer is the Next to Be Auf'ed on Project Runway?

The dramatic promos for this week's episode of Project Runway would have us believe that something happens with Jack that results in his elimination from the show.
I don't buy it.
Yeah, I've believed Bravo in the past, but I'm putting my foot down this time, refusing to accept that they would reveal the next eliminated contestant in this manner. Maybe I'm naive, but I expect Jack to make it through this week.
Which leads us to the question -- who will be eliminated??
Let's actually start with an easier question -- who will be safe? I'd put Jillian, whose design and execution was amazing last week, at the top of this list, followed by Rami, Victorya, Kit and Kevin. Each of the five have been very consistent so far this season, so there's no reason to think any of them are in serious danger this week.
In the middle of the pack I'd put Christian and Stephen -- neither has blown me away, but neither has produced a total clinker, either (although Stephen's outfit last design came close). I'm hoping Christian makes it through, if for no other reason than the fact that his bitchy commentary is ridiculously entertaining.
That leaves, once again, Sweet P and Ricky at the bottom of the pack. Sweet P is still a hot mess, but compared to Ricky she's practically a genius! Please, judges, for the sake of all things Nina Garcia, eliminate Ricky this week! He's been absolutely terrible since the start of the season, and last week's monstrosity should have done him in. How he made it through is a mystery, but you've gotta believe his luck is running out, and he's going to be the next one to go.
But, hey, I predicted he'd go last week, and Chris was the unlucky loser, so what do I know?
Who do you think will be eliminated this week? Leave a comment and let me know.

Celebrity Crush: Friday Night Lights' Zach Gilford

The conventional choice for a Friday Night Lights crush would be Taylor Kitsch, who plays bad boy Tim Riggins on the NBC drama. Or maybe pretty boy Scott Porter, who portrays wheelchair-bound quarterback Jason Street. Or possibly Gaius Charles, who plays cocky running back Smash Williams.
Yeah, all those boys are hot. But I'm pining for Zach Gilford, who could not possibly be any more adorable as quarterback Matt Saracen. Swoon!
He's gawky. He's sweet. He's awkward. And he couldn't be any cuter.
Watching Gilford stammer and stutter his way through a relationship with Julie Taylor, while simultaneously developing confidence as the leader of the Dillion Panthers, has been one of the show's true joys. Gilford, as Saracen, wears his emotions on his sleeve -- when he's anxious, it shows; when he's angry, he can't hide it; and when he's happy and in love, he positively glows. He's that dorky high school boy you want to marry.
Or at least pine for on TV.
So, I say touchdown, Zach Gilford -- keep up the fine work!

Movie Review: Away From Her is a Triumph of Love

I've had the film Away From Her at home now for the past few weeks, but after watching Julie Christie pick up several Best Actress critics awards in the past couple of days, I decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about. And now that I've seen it, I know that there is only one word to describe Christie's performance -- wow.
Written and directed by the young actress Sarah Polley (who is rightly picking up awards for her debut effort), Away From Her is one of the most moving and affecting films I've seen all year. At times devastating, at other times hysterical, the movie tells the story of Fiona (Christie), a vibrant, intelligent woman who is going through Alzheimer's, and the impact her disease has on her loving husband Grant (the subtly heartbreaking Gordon Pinsent). As Grant watches his beloved wife not only "lose herself" to Alzheimer's, but also begin a relationship with a fellow nursing home patient, difficult questions of what we will do to make sure the ones we love are comfortable are raised and fascinatingly answered.
Christie is simply luminous in the role. She brings such a nuanced understanding of Fiona's mental state to the surface, that you can't help but fall in love with the woman. She beautifully manages to give glimpses of the woman Fiona was, even while in the midst of her deteriorating health. If this performance doesn't win Christie an Oscar, there's simply no justice.
Aside from Christie, who defines grace and magnificence in this role, and the wonderful Pinsent, the rest of the cast is also stellar. Wendy Crewson is pitch-perfect as the icy nursing home administrator -- she makes your skin crawl in all the right ways as she encourages Grant to move his wife to a more "progressed" floor of the nursing home. Olympia Dukakis brings humor and vitality to the film, shining as the wife of the nursing home patient Fiona falls for. Kristen Thomson, too, is just-right as the patient nurse who provides Grant with advice.
If the aging process terrifies you, this may not be the film for you. But if you are interested in stories about what we do for love, I beg you to check this movie out. You won't be sorry.

Where is Queer as Folk's Charlie Hunnam?

Where is Charlie Hunnam?
Of course, he's best known for his work on the British version of Queer as Folk, but he's also appeared on the Judd Apatow series Undeclared and in the films Nicholas Nickelby and Green Street Hooligans. But I haven't seen him around for awhile -- anyone know what he's up to?
Until we get an update on Mr. Hunnam's whereabouts, let's remember him fondly...through pictures. Yum!

Reliving the So You Think You Can Dance Tour -- 20 Photos!

Back in October, four friends and I headed out to Long Island, NY to catch the So You Think You Can Dance tour. Danny and Neil and Lacey -- oh my!
While I personally thought this year's concert didn't live up to the sensational show last year's group put on, it was still a treat to see my favorite dances from the season -- Lacey and Kameron's Contemporary, Sabra and Neil's Table Dance, Hok and Jaimie's Bird Dance and much, much more.
My good pal Karen took some amazing photos at the concert, and, due to time constraints, I never got a chance to post them. So, despite the fact that the tour is now over, I thought I'd take this opportunity to post a few of the photos -- they're just too good not to display.
Enjoy!

The Hills To Air Eight Bonus Episodes Early Next Year

So, what did you think of last night's finale of The Hills? Did you think it lived up to the hype? That it was anticlimactic?
Either way, you won't be missing The Hills for long -- Lauren announced on last night's live show that eight bonus episodes of the series will air on MTV in early 2008.
I guess we're not getting rid of LC, Heidi, Spencer and gang that easily!

Matthew Morrison to Join O'Hara and Szot in Lincoln Center Theater's South Pacific

Mmmmm, he's gonna look cute in a sailor costume.
Lincoln Center Theater has announced that Matthew Morrison will star alongside Kelli O'Hara and Paulo Szot in their revival of South Pacific this Spring. Morrison, who previously appeared at LCT opposite O'Hara in The Light in the Piazza, will play the role of Lt. Joe Cable. Danny Burstein (The Drowsy Chaperone) will play Luther Billis in the first-ever Broadway revival of the show, while newcomer Loretta Able Sayres will take on the showy role of Bloody Mary.
Morrison was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in Piazza. He also originated the role of Link Larkin in Hairspray, and earlier this year appeared in the Patty Griffin musical 10 Million Miles at the Atlantic Theater Company.
Happy talk, indeed!
Here are some pictures of Morrison and O'Hara in Piazza:

Maksim Chmerkovskiy Takes it Back -- He Will Stay On Dancing with the Stars

Oh Maks, why am I not surprised that you are a sore loser.
The Dancing with the Stars pro, who partnered Spice Girl Mel B. this past season, told TV Guide last week that he would not be returning to the show. Now, it seems, he's changed his mind.
Among the reasons he had given for quitting were that the competition is unfairly tainted against a woman winning, and his distaste for the decadent Hollywood lifestyle. "I spent some time here just looking around and going, ‘Wow, this is an amazing house,'" he told TV Guide. "But I’m a very analytical person. And right away, I looked past the curtains and I saw the drugs and the difficult lifestyles and the failed marriages. And I saw absolutely no family values — and that is the most important thing.”
Well, it looks like he's figured out a way to deal with the "difficult lifestyles," 'cause he's taking it all back.
Maks told People magazine that he made those comments “at a time when I was very stressed out.” He continued by saying, “This show is amazing and it’s rewarding.... I want people — especially my fans — to know that I appreciate their support. I am not turning my back on the show. I don’t want people to feel betrayed. I love this show.”
Wow, did someone feel a bit of backlash?
I know a good way for Dancing to punish Maks -- put him with rumored contestant Florence Henderson!

Battle to the Finish: Who Will Win America's Next Top Model?

After a season of bad weaves, Aspberger's Syndrom and not-quite-plus size models, it all comes down to this -- Chantal, Saleisha and Jenah are the three remaining contenders on this season of America's Next Top Model. Now the question is... who's gonna win?
If you had asked me this question a few weeks ago, I would have hands-down answered "Jenah!" She has consistently taken the best pictures, and has the kind of edgy, high-fashion look that the judges usually love. Her attitude, however, may end up doing her in -- after weeping her way through last week's episode, she barely escaped elimination, and she's going to have to really show that she wants this if she's going to come out on top.
Then there is Chantal, who I had written off as just another Barbie clone until last week, when her positive attitude (and fierce picture) finally won me over. I still think she's a little white-bread to take home the prize, and if she declares she "loves!" one more thing I'm gonna scream, but if she performs well in the Cover Girl commercial, she could find herself the champion.
Which leads me to Saleisha, who, in the first week of competition, I predicted, based on her natural beauty, would be the winner. I waned on her throughout the season (I don't think her haircut does her any favors), but she remains the most consistent contestant, and her ability to speak articulately is sure to help her in this final stretch. At this point, I'd be shocked if Saleisha doesn't wind up winning the whole thing. I guess she learned something at Tyra's 'T' Camp after all!
Having said all that, it should be noted that any of these three girls would be a huge improvement over reigning Top Model Jaslene, who embarrasingly lisps her way through the "My Life as a Cover Girl" spots. If I never see Jaslene again, it won't be too soon.
Who do you think is going to win? Leave a comment below and let me know!

New York Online Critics Name There Will Be Blood and The Diving Bell Best Picture

Hmmm...who, exactly, makes up the New York Online Critics Circle? Just curious.
Whoever these folks are, they have named There Will Be Blood and The Diving Bell the Best Pictures of 2007. This is the second best picture award for Blood in the past two days, having picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Award just yesterday.
Daniel Day Lewis was again named Best Actor for his work in Blood, while Julie Christie picked up the Best Actress prize for Away From Her. Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) and Cate Blanchett (I'm Not There) were awarded Best Supporting Actor and Actress, respectively, while Owen Wilson, Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola grabbed the Best Screenplay award for The Darjeeling Limited. In addition, the cast of Before the Devil Knows Your Dead was given an Ensemble prize.

The Amazing Race Renewed for 13th Season

After five consecutive Emmy Award wins for Best Reality Series, it can't come as much of a surprise that The Amazing Race has been renewed for a 13th season.
As this year's race is still underway (check out my post "Contrasts in Teamwork, as Siblings are Eliminated on The Amazing Race"), production is gearing up on the next cycle, which is likely being fast-tracked due to the writer's strike. While no premiere date was given in the press release, I'd imagine we'll see the show again sometime this spring.
Which means, come spring, here at Idol Thoughts we'll be watching American Idol, Big Brother, Survivor, Top Model, Dancing with the Stars, The Amazing Race and who knows what else. Bring on the reality TV!

Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester and Friday Night Lights' Minka Kelly: Separated at Birth?

Is anyone else a little weirded out by how similar Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester and Friday Night Lights' Minka Kelly look? They are spittin' images of each other!
Can you tell which young lady is currently dating John Mayer, and which is catfighting all over the Upper East Side on the CW's buzzworthy hit?

Contrasts in Teamwork on The Amazing Race, As Azaria and Hendekia are Eliminated

"I don't think that every team recognizes that the relationship between the partners is critical to winning the race. It's easier said than done."
Those words were spoken by Ron in tonight's episode of The Amazing Race. Ironic, really, since he has probably rivals Nathan for the title of "most abusive partner" on this year's race, but, hey, he has a point. There was a study in contrasts tonight when it comes to teamwork, as Nathan and Jennifer continued to berate each other, and, on the opposite end of the spectrum, TK and Rachel proved to be one of the most loving and supportive teams the show has ever seen. The Goths continue to be positive to each other and about the race, and despite Nicholas' frustration at his grandfather's methodical racing style, they do not raise their voices to each other.
But oh, Nathan and Jennifer. Could it be possible they are trying to come off as hateful, to gain the Jonathan/Victoria infamy card? As much as I would like to believe that is the case, they are way too convincing -- disturbingly so. It angers me that they came in 3rd place, despite their constant quarreling. How do teams that dislike each other so much do so well in this race?
Which leads us to Ron and Christina, who actually managed to get along with each other and work together, and were rewarded with a first place finish (and a catamaran!) As I wrote in my post "Ron and Christina: Love 'Em or Hate 'Em?," it's still hard for me to jump on board with them, but I'm glad they are getting a chance to work through some of their issues.
Of course, it was Azaria and Hendekia who were eliminated tonight, after landing last in Croatia. Despite his control issues, I was enjoying watching their sibling dynamic play out on the show -- there haven't been too many brother/sister teams on the show, and I am a member of a brother/sister pairing myself, so I was intrigued by their interactions with each other. Ah well, see ya later kids.

Golden Compass Tops Box Office, Juno Huge in Limited Release

Despite some pretty rough reviews, Golden Compass managed to top the box office this past weekend, bring in $26.1 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Enchanted was a repeat #2, with $10.7 million, followed by This Christmas ($5 million), Fred Claus ($4.6 million) and Beowulf ($4.4 million).
In limited release news, Atonement wracked up $817K on 32 screens. while Juno did boffo business at just 7 screens, bring in $531K for a per-screen average of $60K. Wow! Word of mouth is great on this one -- I've got two friends who saw it this weekend, and both loved it.
Overall, a pretty weak showing. Here's hoping the Christmas releases spark it up a little.

Daniel Craigs Vows to Go Nude in Next James Bond Film

Get ready to see some more of James Bond's Daniel Craig.
The actor revealed in an interview last week that he plans on doffing his clothes in the next Bond film. His reasoning (which I'm sure thousands of women and some men will have no problem with) is that it's only fair he do so, since women are expected to appear naked so often in movies. He said "I'd go totally nude. I've got nothing to hide, and after all, we ask the girls to reveal almost all, so why not the men?"
In the interview, Craig admits he felt "nervous" about the scene in the last Bond film, in which his character emerged from the ocean in just a pair of skimpy blue swimming shorts. "Did I know the trunk thing would be such a big deal? Yeah. I saw it on a huge billboard in Hollywood and people were screaming. It did make me feel rather nervous."
Imagine how nervous he'll feel if he goes the full monty!

Amy Winehouse's Mother Publicly Pleads With Her To Get Help

Despite receiving six Grammy nominations this week, it's no secret that singer Amy Winehouse is a troubled girl. Now, according to London's News of the World, her mother has written her an open letter, pleading with her to get help.
Winehouse is so talented -- it's very sad that it's come to this. Hopefully she will heed her mother's words, and get the help she needs.
Here is the letter from Mrs. Winehouse to Amy:
“Dear Amy,
I HOPE you understand why I’m writing this. We have spoken recently but many people will wonder why I haven’t run down to whatever hotel you’re staying in, scooped you up and taken you home for a hot bath and a steaming bowl of chicken soup.
It’s because your father and I know what you’re like, Amy.
We want to help you, but we know that unless you want to be helped— unless you come to us—anything we tried would be in vain.
So this letter is my way of making sure that you know that—that all you have to do is come to us, Amy, and we’ll do everything in our power to get you well again.
After all, you are still my baby and you always will be.
I pile hope upon hope that you will make that decision, Amy, and your strong will can bend for just a moment to make that decision and come home to me.
Even when you were only a rosy-cheeked five-year-old singing into a hairbrush in front of the mirror, you had a will as stubborn as a mule. Do you remember?
We couldn’t ever get you to see things from any angle other than your own. You could swear day was night and Heaven help anyone who tried to disagree.
You were never a wayward daughter but you always had a strong will and a mind of your own—qualities your father and I were so proud of.
You were well brought up, you had a keen sense of right from wrong and you understood the values we always impressed on you as a family.
But you would never be pressurised or influenced into doing something if your heart wasn’t in it.
I know there’s no point in me ringing you, fussing over you or ordering you to do something. I need you to take that first step, darling. I need you to call me, to pick up that phone and tell me what’s troubling you.
Your father and I would like nothing more—wherever you are, whatever you need, we’re here for you day and night. I hope you know that. We were terrified after we saw those pictures of you earlier this week, wandering the freezing streets of London at dawn in your underwear. All I wanted to do was rush into those pictures and wrap you up in a big, warm blanket.
Do you remember those Decembers long ago when I used to swaddle you in a thick winter coat? I used to wrap you up and give you a kiss on the nose before you went out to play in the cold.
“Don’t worry about me Ma, I’ll be fine!” you used to laugh. But, like any mother, of course I worried. Just as I’m worrying now.
Because I know that however big, grown-up and successful my Amy gets, she still needs the love of her Ma.
Do you remember on January 14 this year, when your album got to number one? Do you remember how overjoyed your father and I both were? We shed tears of joy for you that night.
And not just because we were delighted for your success, that you had finally fulfilled that childhood dream of singing your heart out in front of millions. But also because finally, the whole country thought our little girl was just as special as we knew you were.
Some wonderful things have happened since that night, darling, but also some not so wonderful. Blake, your husband, might not be my favourite person—you know that, Amy—but he’s your choice and I would never say anything about him to hurt you.
When I was quoted recently as saying “Thank God Blake’s inside” what I meant was that putting him in jail might help him to clean up HIS act and change HIS life.
It wasn’t said out of viciousness or to upset you. If your relationship is meant to be, it will survive.
I’m a great believer that everything in life happens for a reason, a purpose. And if you two are destined to be together forever, then so be it.
But I want you to love Blake for who he is, Amy. Not because you feel sorry for him, or because he can get you doped up. Not for any other reason than that you have respect for him.
I completely understand and sympathise with how you feel heartbroken over your separation and I’d do anything to help you end that unhappiness.
No mother likes to see her child suffering like that.
Having to cancel your tour, as well, has been very sad. But I know it’s happened for the best.
Despite disappointing all of your fans, who I know you treasure so much, maybe it will pull you up and make you stop and think and take stock of where your life is going.
I pray it does. I hope it makes you realise that although you might be a superstar, you’re not superwoman.
Early fame has overwhelmed you, it’s dizzied you and muddled your mind. For a moment, forget you’re a superstar. You’re also young and vulnerable. Remember you’re just an ordinary human being, no stronger than any of the rest of us. You think you’re strong enough to get through this on your own, darling, but you’re not.
I want you back, and I’ll make you fitter and stronger. I’d like nothing better than to have you home and help you put on a bit of weight with some wholesome home cooking.
You’re at your happiest in family situations, I remember. It’s part of that strong Jewish tradition you were raised in. Remember how you spent time with my sister before the gig in Newcastle the other week? You felt comfortable and at ease. That’s how I know family is important to you.
But I can’t force you to do something you don’t want to. You have to want it to happen darling, you have to ask for it.
Me and your father, and your brother Alex all want you to be happy and quickly restored to full health. For the moment, that’s all of our priorities.
We are concerned, but we’re not panicking. You’ve got to see things in your own time and I’m sure you will.
You are a brilliant talent, of course, and if you get yourself well, you’ll be able to go on and fulfil your destiny.
You’re a true professional who thrives on work and you need to get back into that routine.
We know you don’t want to let your fans down. We know how important they are to you and how once you’re over this present setback you’ll give them a show they’ll never forget.
You know I’m an optimist, and that I think, with our help, you will get back on top of things.
But I know you must come to me first for that to happen.
I just hope that, because of this letter, you do. Pick up the phone.
All my love, Ma”

Video of Carrie Underwood Singing "Sound of Music" at Movies Rock
Where isn't Carrie Underwood these days?
She was certainly at Movie Rocks last night, crooning The Sound of Music's title song. It's a different kind of singing for Carrie -- higher, actually, and more gentle than she is generally accustomed to. We even got a bit of head voice in there! It's not my favorite Carrie performance ever, but it does prove that there isn't much she can't do.

Is Mario Lopez's Body Real?

Dayum, AC Slater!
Dancing with the Stars finalist Mario Lopez (though he'll always be "Saved By The Bell's Mario Lopez" to me) apparently took a little vacation to Mexico, affording him the opportunity to lose his shirt and show off what God (and the gym) has given him. Is that body even real?
I mean, who looks like that?!?!

American Idol's Blake Lewis On Track To Sell About 100K Albums

Just two weeks after Jordin Sparks' debut album failed to make much of a dent on the sales chart, word comes that Blake Lewis is on track to move about 100K copies of his debut album. That amount should be enough to land him in the Top 10 on this week's album chart -- a comparable position to Jordin's debut. This is a bit surprising, considering Blake's single, "Break Anotha," has not had nearly the traction that Jordin's "Tattoo" has had.
Idol runners-up have had mixed success in their debut weeks. While Season 2 second-place finisher Clay Aiken still holds the record for biggest debut sales week of any Idol contestant, Justin Guarini, Diana Degarmo, Bo Bice and Katharine McPhee have not been nearly as successful. If estimates for Blake's CD hold, he will have the third highest debut from a runner-up.
Take a look at the debuts for each of the second place finishers:
1. Clay Aiken, 613K
2. Bo Bice, 225K
3. Katharine McPhee, 116K
4. Justin Guarini, 50K
5. Diana Degarmo, 47K

Great Performance: Into the Wild's Emile Hirsch

Have you seen Into the Wild? If not, RUN, do not walk, to a theater to see this brilliant movie.
A large part of the reason the movie is so successful is the transcendant performance of Emile Hirsch. I had seen Hirsch in Alpha Dog last year, and had heard about his role in the upcoming Speed Racer, but I was completely unprepared for the tour de force he delivers in this movie. His character, Chris McCandless, a graduate of Emory University, walks into the Alaskan wilderness in 1992 to "find himself." And he never walks out.
While it would be easy to peg Chris as a nutcase or a self-indulgent narcissist, Hirsch's performance defies such easy characterizations. He is simulatenously charming and maddening, seeking both solitude and also genuine connection. At moments you want to punch him in the face; at other moments you want to hold him in your arms. Hirsch is 100% believable at every turn. It is a truly breathtaking performance.
And he's sooooooo cute!
If you haven't yet seen the film, check it out. You won't be sorry.

Runway's Jack and Top Chef's Dale Start an Inter-Reality Show Romance

You always hear about former Survivor or Big Brother contestants hooking up, and they are usually heterosexual pairings, so I'm happy to report that Project Runway's Jack and Top Chef's Dale are dating!
Bravo's Outzone blog broke the news that the two reality stars have started seeing each other, and they included the above picture as proof. Adorable!
Dale, of course, came in second on this past season of Top Chef, while Jack is still in contention for the title on Runway.
Jack had this to say to Bravo: "It's very baby steps. I really like him a lot. And geography is a bit of an issue, but we'll see where it goes. I like him a lot. I assume he likes me a lot. Unless he's lying...(laughter)... He's adorable. I like keeping it incestuous, keep it in the Bravo family." Dale also chimed in on the new relationship, saying, ""Yeah, we randomly met over Myspace. And then we bumped into each other at the OUT100 party and clicked. He's hilarious. We're just gonna roll with it and see what happens. And he's cute as %&#@. We have the same sense of humor."
Soooooo cute!

The End of Gizzie on Grey's Anatomy

RIP, Gizzie.
The much criticized coupling of Izzie and George on Grey's Anatomy came to an inauspicious end last night, as the two doctors realized they just don't have the kind of chemistry to make a relationship work.
Really, guys? We figured that out months ago.
I'm actually pleased with the way it was handled, though -- hopefully George and Izzie, so adorable as best friends for the first few seasons of the show, will be able to put this romantic escapade behind them and get back to the fun they used to have. If the scene's final image, of George, Izzie, Meredith, Christina and Lexie dancing around is any indication, it may just be possible.
Elsewhere in Grey's land, Meredith, once again, decided she's ready to take it to the next level with McDreamy. Is anyone else over this I-love-you/I'm-running-away/I-love-you game that Meredith and Derek are playing? Despite the overly precious surgery scene, culminating in a kiss between Derek and the suddenly prominent Rose (where did this woman come from?), I'm glad Derek seems to be trying to move on --I'm just not sure how much more I can take of this runaround that he and Meredith are doing.
I continue to be impressed with Chyler Leigh, meanwhile, who is making Lexie more complex than I had originally thought she was capable of being. Her recognition of the hospital's role in Seth Green's death was powerful, and her uttering of the line "I have no one" was truly heartbreaking. It was nice to see Lexie included in the end-of-episode dance party.
Justin Chambers is also doing nuanced, powerful work as Alex -- his scene with Ava/Rebecca, where he reminded her what it was she was seeking from him, was both disturbing and sexy. I'm not sure what direction Alex is heading in, but I'm eager to see what becomes of the ever-evolving doctor. It's also nice to see Dr. Hahn getting more three-dimensional, and I'm curious to see how her prickly relationship with Christina continues to play out. These two are much more alike than I think either of them wants to believe.
Finally, attention must be paid to Bailey. Ooh, girl, you are in trouble! Getting to play personal struggles more than she has in the past, Chandra Wilson continues to do stellar work week after week, and this time she got to give the best speech of the episode with half her face covered, and she still made it work!
Who knows when we'll get another episode of Grey's, thanks to the frustrating writers strike, but I'll be there, whenever it is, to see what happens next at the always-exciting Seattle Grace.

Check Out the Trailer for the Sex and the City Movie

How many months until May??
The trailer for the film version of Sex and the City hit the web today, and while it doesn't give away any plot points from the film, it does give a glimpse of scenes, as well as reveals May 2008 as the release date. Bring it on!
The movie seems to be heavily wedding-influenced, as Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is seen twirling around in a wedding dress. In addition, there is an extended shot of she and Mr. Big (Chris Noth) kissing. Will they finally tie the knot?
Click here to watch the trailer, and lemme know what you think.

Barbara Walters Names JK Rowling the Most Fascinating Person of the Year

I can't argue with Babs -- JK Rowling is quite a woman.
Yes, Rowling was named the Most Fascinating Person of the Year on Barbara Walters' annual special. The Harry Potter author, who was at one point a welfare mother, is basically single-handedly responsible for making reading relevant to the internet generation. It's not often something becomes the kind of phenomenon Harry Potter is. While I never got into the series, everyone I know who is claims the final installment was the best ending imaginable. The movies are huge. Yeah, I'd say she's pretty fascinating.
I can't really knock Barbara's choices for the rest of the Top 10 either. I'll give it up to Bill Clinton, 'cause he rocks, and Hugo Chavez, 'cause, well, he's the president of Venezuela. Posh and David Beckham was an understandable choice (and any chance to get a peek at David's gorgeous face is okay by me), and you won't hear me complain about the inclusion of either Jennifer Hudson (could she be any more charming?) or Justin Timberlake (love him). Don Imus had quite the controversial year, and myspace really has changed the social networking landscape, so their inclusions also have merit.
I was originally skeptical about Katherine Heigl's spot on the list. Don't get me wrong, I love her on Grey's Anatomy and I thought she was fantastic in Knocked Up. And I think it's adorable how close she and TR Knight are, and how she stood up for him. And I also love that she doesn't bite her tongue, recently giving a very candid interview where she called Gizzie (the coupling of her and Knight's characters) a ratings ploy and Knocked Up mysogynistic. Yeah, when I thought about it, I realized that I guess I do find her pretty fascinating.
So, good job Babs. The only person missing was your old friend Rosie O'Donnell. We won't hold it against you.

Survivor's Denise Takes Center Stage

Who knew the lunchlady could be so compelling?
All season long, Survivor's Denise has seemed sweet, but simple. Who knew she even had a husband, let alone two kids? She nearly broke my heart during this episode, watching her be so darn cute with her husband.
And then she went and landed herself right in the middle of all of the drama. The rest of the game literally laid in her hands -- whichever way she voted was going to determine how the remaining days played out. Watching her struggle with the decision was just adorable -- clearly she is not used to being in situations like these. Her decision, ultimately, was the safe one, and, what she said to the camera, that "this will probably be my biggest mistake in the game," is probably correct. However, based on the previews for next week's episode, the you-know-what hits the fan anyways, so who knows what's going to happen?
Confession: I've been watching Survivor since Season 2, and I cry every single season during the family reunion episode. I don't know what it is, but the sheer bliss that envelops the contestants is endlessly moving to me. Don't judge.
As for the elimination of Erik -- whoooo? For such a pretty boy, he really made very little impact on the show, except, of course, when he proudly declared his virginity. (George Bush must be proud.) Quite frankly, I'm glad he's gone -- the final 5 all bring something unique to the table (even if, in the case of Courtney, it's just a lousy attitude and a brilliantly sharp tongue.)
I'm always a sucker for the underdog, so I'd like to be rooting for Peih-Gee, especially after her second Immunity win, but she's just not that likable. Thus, I'm pulling for Machiavellian Todd, who may or may not have faked his sister's miscarriage (I'm going to choose to believe that he didn't, but, after the initial revelation, he didn't seem that upset about it, now did he?) I also wouldn't mind an Amanda victory -- she's been thinking throughout, and plotting James' demise was a brilliant move. To see the two of them battle it out in the Final 2 would be a treat.
Speaking of which, it does seem like they are on track to go into the Season Finale with a Final Four, as opposed to a Final Five, as they have done the past couple of seasons. I like that better -- a head=to-head battle between two players at the end amps up the stakes that much higher.

We aren't getting rid of LC and Heidi that easily!
In Touch is reporting that MTV hit The Hills has been renewed for a fourth season. Despite reports that the action on the show is staged, it is actually more popular than ever, with Lauren, Audrina, Whitney, Heidi and Spencer all over the blogs and tabloids.
Meanwhile, Bravo has announced that it has renewed Top Design and Shear Genius for second seasons.

Idols Rack Up 13 Grammy Nods; Carrie and Chris Lead With Four Each
Former American Idol contestants will have quite a presence at this year's Grammy Awards, with five different former Idols nominated -- Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, and, in a bit of a surprise, Mandisa.
Carrie and Chris led the Idol pack with four nods each. Carrie, who won two awards last year, was nominated for Song of the Year ("Before He Cheats"), Country Vocal Collaboration ("Oh Love" with Brad Paisley), Best Female Country Vocal Performance ("Before He Cheats") and Best Country Song ("Before He Cheats").
Daughtry, who missed out on an expected Best New Artist nod, was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group ("Home"), Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group ("It's Not Over"), Best Rock Song ("It's Not Over") and Best Rock Album.
Fantasia, who has never won a Grammy Award, got three nominations, for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance ("When I See U"), Best R&B Song ("When I See U") and Best Contemporary R&B Album.
Kelly Clarkson, meanwhile, grabbed a nomination (her fourth overall) in the Country Vocal Collaboration category for her duet with Reba McEntire on "Because of You." She will compete with Carrie in this category, in the first head-to-head Grammy match-up between Idols.
Clarkson's album My December, which was submitted in the rock categories, did not receive any nominations.
Finally, Season 5 ninth place finisher Mandisa picked up her first nomination for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album for her album True Beauty.

Project Runway Spares Ricky Again, As Jillian Steps Up Her Game and Chris Gets Auf'ed
No one ever said Project Runway was fair.
Despite the fact that he has yet to produce an aesthetically appealing, well executed design, Ricky was spared yet again last night on the design show, as lovable Chris was sent packin'. What in the name of Heidi is going on here?
Yes, Chris' shoulder padded jacket was a true travesty. But Ricky's wasn't much better, and, as Nina Garcia (god I love that beeyatch) pointed out, after last week's suit debacle, shouldn't he have made sure he sent a goodlooking piece down the runway? Apparently not.
As for the bickering going on between Ricky and Victorya, I couldn't quite tell who was in the right and who was in the wrong -- until I saw the finished pieces, that is. Victorya's outfit, and even Elisa's, were head-and-shoulders better than Ricky's monstrosity. And yet -- he's still around. What gives?
Especially when it was such a joyful and pleasant contesant who was kicked off in his stead. Ah Chris, we hardly knew ya.
Jillian, meanwhile, really stepped up her game last night, leading her team to victory, and producing the best looking outfit of the night. I mean, those overalls were fierce! After three straight weeks of finishing in the middle of the pack, I love her declaration that she is going to be in the Top 3 from here on out. Confidence with the ability to back it up? That's the kind of designer I'm lookin' for.
And, of course, I must comment on Christian, who continues to drop bon mots loaded with an almost unfathomable amount of wit. The pixie is hysterical! I hope he sticks around for a long time to come, just so that he can provide hilarious commentary on the action going on around him.
Next week can we please get rid of Ricky? Please?!?

Kiefer Sutherland Gives Good Mugshot

If you're gonna go to jail, you might as well take a fierce headshot. In the case of Kiefer Sutherland, I think Tyra would approve!
The 24 star began his 48 days behind bars at Glendale, Calif. City Jail last night for his DUI conviction.
He may be a chronic drunk driver, but his eyes are amazing!

Jenah Saved As Top Model Eliminates Bianca
I guess there is such a thing as Top Model karma.
After talking crap about her fellow contestants all season long, and leading Jenah astray during a challenge, Bianca is, in the immortal words of Tyra Banks, "no longer in the running to become America's Next Top Model."
It wasn't Bianca's attitude that got her the boot, though -- in fact, her attitude is what almost kept her in the competition. The girl definitely has grown throughout the course of the show, and she genuinely seemed like she wants to be there, which is more than can be said for Jenah, who takes fierce pictures week after week but won't stop carping about being homesick. Unfortunately for her, though, she doesn't have that "innate" modeling ability that some of the other girls have (could she have been any stiffer during her photo shoot with Tyra), and as such was eliminated.
You can always tell when Tyra has taken a liking to a girl, because she'll give her a motivational speech as she's escorting her out the door. That Tyra -- so classy.
Whether you interpreted her comments throughout the season as cattiness or just plain honesty, Bianca certainly did not bite her tongue, and for that reason alone she was fun to have around. We'll miss ya next week, B.
As for the remaining contestants, Chantal, who I've hated for most of the season, finally impressed me last night, not only with her fierce photo shoot, but also with her positive attitude. Yes, her chipperness makes me want to punch her in the mouth a little bit, but you can't help admire how much she loves loves loves doing what she's doing. Did she mention she loves it?
Saleisha also stepped up her game, giving a spectacular photo shoot and proving, once again, that she is the one to beat in the competition. Don't you think Cover Girl would just die to have a model who doesn't sound like a deaf drag queen doing the commercials? (Yes, Jaslene, I'm talking to you!)
Next week -- the finale. Can't wait!!

Celine Dion's 'A New Day' Coming to the Big Screen

I love Celine Dion. Yeah, I said it. No judgement!
Whether it's her new single "Taking Chances," or classics like "It's All Coming Back To Me" or "My Heart Will Go On," I can't get enough of the Canadian chanteuse. When Celine announced the end of her Las Vegas concerts, I was crestfallen that I had missed the chance to see one of my favorite divas doin' her thing (in a concert choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance's Mia Michaels, no less!)
Well, I just may get my chance.
Celine's "A New Day" concert will be broadcast on 200 film screens for one night only, on Monday December 17. Check http://www.fathomevents.com/ for details of which theaters will be showing the concert.
Now please excuse me while I go buy my tickets...

Watch Video From Broadway's Back! Celebration
To commemmorate the ending of the Broadway strike, and to kick of the holiday season, cast members from nearly every Broadway show appeared together last week. Theater luminaries Bernadette Peters and Angela Lansbury led the celebration, which also featured Spring Awakening's Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele, Legally Blonde's Laura Bell Bundy, Xanadu's Cheyenne Jackson and Kerry Butler, Les Miserables' Max Von Essen and many more.
Watch the video above (produced by Broadwayworld.com), which is not great quality, but gives an idea of how the event went down (The stars belted "There's No Business Like Show Business" and "We Need A Little Christmas.") And...go see a Broadway show!

The OC's Adam Brody To Play The Flash in Justice League Movie

It's quite a superhero day here at Idol Thoughts.
First there was the reveal of the new Batman poster, and now comes news that The OC star Adam Brody will play The Flash in the new Justice League film. From Seth Cohen to superhero -- quite a step-up! The Los Angeles Times is reporting that negotiations are over and the deal is done.
The film will feature young versions of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and more. Much of young Hollywood (including several members of the Friday Night Lights cast) are known to have auditioned for the flick, but only Adam Brody and Australian supermodel Megan Gale (Wonder Woman) have been cast.
What do you think -- can scrawny/adorable Adam Brody pull off playing a crimefighter, with skills other than sarcasm and irony?

Tonight's Elimination Predictions: Top Model and Project Runway
You've gotta love 'Fashion Wednesdays' -- America's Next Top Model and Project Runway on in the same evening! Heidi and Tyra and Twiggy, oh my!
While Runway is just getting revved up, Top Model is quickly coming to a close, with just four contestants remaining. After Heather's ouster last week, only Chantal, Jenah, Bianca and Saleisha remain. Each has their strengths and weaknesses -- who will get the boot tonight?
While I would send Chantal and her bubbly self packing, I'm unfortunately gonna have to guess Jenah will be the one to go. She's actually my favorite of the remaining contestants, but the judges really seemed to have soured on her sarcastic demeanor and "I don't care" attitude, so despite taking top-notch photos week after week, I think she may end up getting shown the door.
It's a bit more difficult to predict who will be eliminated on Runway, since there are so many contestants still around. It'd be a shame if Ricky was allowed to stay on the show any longer, considering he's wept his way through three terrible designs in the past three weeks. Sweet Pea, too, has been struggling, so don't be surprised if she finds herself close to being auf'ed. I'd also add Elisa into the "danger zone," even though she has mainstream-ed her style in the last couple of weeks -- she may just be too "out there" for this competition. And, of course, any of the other designers who have fallen somewhere in the middle of the pack (Chris, Christian, Stephen) could also be vulnerable.
Having said all that, here's my Wednesday fashion elimination prediction:
Top Model: Jenah
Project Runway: Ricky
Who do you think will get the boot? Leave a comment and let me know!

Check Out The Poster For The New Batman Film

Pretty cool, no?
I'm not much of a comic book movie guy, but even I'm psyched to see what Heath Ledger will do as The Joker. A gay rancher, Bob Dylan and now The Joker? Quite an eclectic career he's carving out for himself!

Ten Favorite Reality Show Contestants: Top Model's Adrianne Curry at #9
I'm in the process of listing my Ten Favorite Reality Show Contestants of All Time. Some of these folks I fell in love with for the talent; others simply had personalities that won me over. Any way you look at them, though, these are my faves.
Please note: I did not include any person who was a "celebrity" before they appeared on a reality show, so all contestants from Dancing with the Stars and other shows like it were ineligible for this list.
#9 -- Adrienne Curry, America's Next Top Model
Through the years there have been many memorable Top Model contestants, but few have been as memorable, and, ultimately, likable as Season 1 champion Adrienne Curry. Sure, she's gone on to embarrass herself of Surreal Life and My Fair Brady, but during her first reality show stint she was forthright, charming (in a rough-around-the-edges kinda way), and a very versatile model. Now, of course, Top Model contestants come on the show knowing what they are getting into -- there will be a makeover, they will have to pose nude, there will be shoots that require them to do ridiculous things. Adrienne was game for whatever the challenge was -- she doffed her clothes without a second thought (while Robin and Shannon balked at posing nude), and instead of cowering in fear, she actually seemed excited to pose with a snake. She hasn't had much of a career as a model, but who cares? She helped make Top Model into the must-see hit that it is today, and for that she is most deserving of a spot on this list.

Daughtry, Underwood and Sparks' All See Steep Sales Drops
Not much good news on the sales chart for former Idols this week -- Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks and Daughtry all saw significant sales drops in the week ending December 3.
Underwood, once again, claimed the highest position, moving 91K albums (a drop of 33%) for the #9 position. Sparks, meanwhile, fell a whopping 60% to just 48K, which leaves her at #18. (This despite the fact that her single just hit the Top 10 on the Pop Chart -- click here for more info on that). Daughtry saw the smallest drop of the three former Idols on the chart (just 22%), selling 33K for the #37 spot.
The week's top album was, for the second straight week, Josh Groban's Christmas collection, which moved an astounding 530K copies. Wow! The Eagles (309K), Alicia Keys (255K), Now 26 (124K) and Garth Brooks (108K) rounded out the Top 5.

HBO Will Examine The Wire In Back-to-Back Specials This Month
The Wire has been called the best show on television. I'm here to tell you -- it's true.
I've only seen the first three seasons of the HBO drama, which looks at the different, complex areas of life in Baltimore (drugs, the docks, politics, education, and the media), but I can definitively say it is truly transcendant, featuring some of the best writing I have
